Inspection Procedure

HINT:

Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester. Freeze frame data records the engine conditions when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was running or stopped, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

  1. CHECK SPARK PLUG AND SPARK OF MISFIRING CYLINDER 

    NG: Go to step  4

    OK: Go to next step 

  2. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (IGNITION COIL - ECM [IGF SIGNAL TERMINAL]) 
    1. Check harness and connector (see ELECTRONIC CIRCUIT INSPECTION PROCEDURE ).

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to next step 

  3. INSPECT ECM (IGF1 AND IGF2 VOLTAGE) 
    1. Disconnect the ignition coil connector.
    2. Turn the ignition switch ON.
    3. Measure the voltage of the E6 and E8 ECM connector.

      Standard voltage 

      VOLTAGE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      E8-24 (IGF1) - E6-1 (E1) 4.5 to 5.5 V
      E8-25 (IGF2) - E6-1 (E1) 4.5 to 5.5 V
    4. Reconnect the ignition coil connector.

    NG: REPLACE ECM

    OK: REPLACE IGNITION COIL 

  4. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (IGNITION COIL - ECM [IGT SIGNAL TERMINAL]) 
    1. Check harness and connector (see ELECTRONIC CIRCUIT INSPECTION PROCEDURE ).

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to next step 

  5. INSPECT ECM (IGT1, IGT2, IGT3, IGT4, IGT5, IGT6, IGT7 OR IGT8 VOLTAGE) 
    1. Measure the voltage of the E6 and E8 ECM connectors when the engine is cranked.

      Standard voltage 

      VOLTAGE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      E8-8 (IGT1) - E6-1 (E1) 0.1 to 4.5 V
      E8-15 (IGT2) - E6-1 (E1) 0.1 to 4.5 V
      E8-11 (IGT3) - E6-1 (E1) 0.1 to 4.5 V
      E8-10 (IGT4) - E6-1 (E1) 0.1 to 4.5 V
      E8-13 (IGT5) - E6-1 (E1) 0.1 to 4.5 V
      E8-12 (IGT6) - E6-1 (E1) 0.1 to 4.5 V
      E8-14 (IGT7) - E6-1 (E1) 0.1 to 4.5 V
      E8-9 (IGT8) - E6-1 (E1) 0.1 to 4.5 V

    NG: REPLACE ECM

    OK: Go to next step 

  6. INSPECT ECM (IGT1, IGT2, IGT3, IGT4, IGT5, IGT6, IGT7 OR IGT8 VOLTAGE) 
    1. Disconnect the I1, I2, I3, I4, I5, I6, I7 or I8 ignition coil connector.
    2. Measure the voltage of the E6 and E8 ECM connectors when the engine is cranked.

      Standard voltage 

      VOLTAGE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      E8-8 (IGT1) - E6-1 (E1) 4.5 V or more
      E8-15 (IGT2) - E6-1 (E1) 4.5 V or more
      E8-11 (IGT3) - E6-1 (E1) 4.5 V or more
      E8-10 (IGT4) - E6-1 (E1) 4.5 V or more
      E8-13 (IGT5) - E6-1 (E1) 4.5 V or more
      E8-12 (IGT6) - E6-1 (E1) 4.5 V or more
      E8-14 (IGT7) - E6-1 (E1) 4.5 V or more
      E8-9 (IGT8) - E6-1 (E1) 4.5 V or more
    3. Reconnect the ignition coil connector.

    NG: REPLACE ECM

    OK: Go to next step 

  7. INSPECT IGNITION COIL (POWER SOURCE) 
    1. Disconnect the I1, I2, I3, I4, I5, I6, I7 and I8 ignition coil connector.
    2. Turn the ignition switch ON or START.
    3. Measure the voltage of the wire harness side connector and body ground.

      Standard voltage 

      VOLTAGE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      I1-1 (+B) - Body ground 9 to 14 V
      I2-1 (+B) - Body ground 9 to 14 V
      I3-1 (+B) - Body ground 9 to 14 V
      I4-1 (+B) - Body ground 9 to 14 V
      I5-1 (+B) - Body ground 9 to 14 V
      I6-1 (+B) - Body ground 9 to 14 V
      I7-1 (+B) - Body ground 9 to 14 V
      I8-1 (+B) - Body ground 9 to 14 V
    4. Reconnect the ignition coil connector.

    OK: REPLACE IGNITION COIL

    NG: Go to next step 

  8. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (IGNITION COIL - IGNITION SWITCH) 
    1. Check harness and connector (see ELECTRONIC CIRCUIT INSPECTION PROCEDURE ).

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: REPLACE IGNITION COIL
