Inspection Procedure
HINT:
Read freeze frame data using the hand-held tester. Freeze frame data records the engine conditions when a malfunction is detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was running or stopped, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
- INSPECT SPARK PLUG
- Remove the engine cover.
- Remove the ignition coil and the spark plug of misfire cylinder.
- Measure the spark plug electrode gap.
Standard:
The electrode gap is 1.0 to 1.3 mm (0.039 to 0.051 in.)
- Check the electrode for carbon deposits.
Recommended:
SPARK PLUG SPECIFICATIONSManufacturer Spark Plug Type DENSO SK20R11 NGK IFR6A11 NOTE: If the electrode gap is larger than the standard, replace the spark plug. Do not adjust the electrode gap.
- NG: REPLACE SPARK PLUG
- OK: Go to next step.
- CHECK SPARK AND IGNITION
- Disconnect the injector connectors to prevent the engine starting.
- Install the spark plug to the ignition coil.
- Attach the spark plug to the cylinder head cover.
- Crank the engine within 2 seconds and check the spark.
OK: Spark occurs
- NG: Go to step 5 .
- OK: Go to next step.
- CHECK WIRE HARNESS (IGNITION COIL - ECM)
- Disconnect the I1, I2, I3, I4, I5, I6, I7 and I8 ignition coil connectors.
- Disconnect the E4 ECM connector.
- Measure the resistance of the wire harness side connectors.
Standard:

- OK: Go to next step.
- CHECK ECM (IF1L, IF2L, IF1R, IF2R VOLTAGE)
- Disconnect the I1, I2, I3, I4, I5, I6, I7 and I8 ignition coil connectors.
- Turn the ignition switch ON.
- Measure the voltage of the ECM connectors.
Standard:
RESISTANCE SPECIFICATIONSTester Connection Specified Condition E4-6 (IF1L) - E3-7 (E1) 4.5 to 5.5 V E4-4 (IF2L) - E3-7 (E1) 4.5 to 5.5 V E4-7 (IF1R) - E3-7 (E1) 4.5 to 5.5 V E4-5 (IF2R) - E3-7 (E1) 4.5 to 5.5 V
- NG: REPLACE ECM (See REPLACEMENT )
- OK: REPLACE IGNITION COIL ASSY (see IGNITION COIL )
- CHECK WIRE HARNESS (IGNITION COIL - ECM)
- Disconnect the I1, I2, I3, I4, I5, I6, I7 and I8 ignition coil connectors.
- Disconnect the E2 and E4 ECM connectors.
- Measure the resistance of the wire harness side connectors.
Standard:

- CHECK ECM (IGT1, IGT2, IGT3, IGT4, IGT5, IGT6, IGT7, IGT8 VOLTAGE)
- Measure the voltage of the ECM connectors when the engine is cranked.
Standard:

- NG: REPLACE ECM (See REPLACEMENT )
- OK: Go to next step.
- Measure the voltage of the ECM connectors when the engine is cranked.
- CHECK WIRE HARNESS (POWER SOURCE)
- Disconnect the I1, I2, I3, I4, I5, I6, I7 and I8 ignition coil connectors.
- Turn the ignition switch from ON to START.
- Measure the voltage of the wire harness side connector.
Standard:

- OK: REPLACE IGNITION COIL ASSY (See IGNITION COIL )
- NG: Go to next step.
- INSPECT FUSE (INJ)
- Remove the INJ fuse from the engine room No. 2 R/B.
- Measure the resistance of the INJ fuse.
Standard: Below 1 Ω
- NG: REPLACE FUSE
- OK: Go to next step.
- CHECK WIRE HARNESS (IGNITION COIL - IG2 RELAY)
- Disconnect the I1, I2, I3, I4, I5, I6, I7 and I8 ignition coil connectors.
- Remove the IG2 relay from the engine room No. 1 R/B.
- Measure the resistance of the wire harness side connectors.
Standard:
