Spiral Cable Sub-ASSY: Replacement

  1. SEE  PRECAUTION  
  2. DISCONNECT BATTERY NEGATIVE TERMINAL (SEE  SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM   ) 
  3. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD 
  4. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER NO.2 (SEE  REPLACEMENT   ) 
  5. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER NO.3 (SEE  REPLACEMENT   ) 
  6. REMOVE HORN BUTTON ASSY (SEE  REPLACEMENT   ) 
  7. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSY (SEE  OVERHAUL  ) 

    SST 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021)

  8. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER LWR 
    1. Remove the 3 screws and steering column cover LWR.
  9. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER UPR 
    1. Remove the steering column cover UPR.

  10. REMOVE SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSY 
    1. Disconnect the airbag connector and connector from the spiral cable sub-assy.
    2. Remove the 4 screws and spiral cable sub-assy.

  11. INSPECT SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSY 
    1. If the following condition is identified, replace the spiral cable sub-assy with new one.

      Condition: 

      Scratches or cracks on the connector 

      Cracks, dents or chipping of the spiral cable sub-assy 

  12. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD 
    1. Check that the front wheels are facing straight ahead.
  13. INSTALL SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSY 
    1. Set the turn signal switch in neutral position.
      NOTE: Make sure of the neutral position since the pin of the turn signal switch may be snapped.
    2. Install the spiral cable sub-assy with the 4 screws.
      NOTE: When replacing the spiral cable sub-assy with new one, remove the lock pin before installing the handle.
    3. Connect the airbag connector and connector.
    4. Install the steering column cover with the 3 screws.
  14. CENTER SPIRAL CABLE 
    1. Check that the ignition switch is OFF.
    2. Check that the battery negative terminal is disconnected.
      NOTE: Do not start the operation for 90 seconds after removing the terminal.
    3. Turn the cable counterclockwise by hand until it becomes harder to turn.

    4. Then rotate the cable clockwise about 2.5 turns to align the marks.

      HINT:

      The cable will rotate about 2.5 turns to both left and right of the center.

  15. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSY (SEE  OVERHAUL  ) 
  16. INSTALL HORN BUTTON ASSY (SEE  REPLACEMENT   ) 
  17. INSPECT HORN BUTTON ASSY (SEE  ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION   ) 
  18. INSPECT SRS WARNING LIGHT (SEE  DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM  )
