Inspection Procedure
HINT:
Read freeze frame data using the hand-held tester. Freeze frame data records the engine conditions when a malfunction is detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was running or stopped, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was LEAN or RICH, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
- INSPECT SPARK PLUG
- Remove the engine cover.
- Remove the ignition coil and the spark plug of the misfire cylinder.
- Measure the spark plug's electrode gap.
Standard:
Electrode gap: 1.0 to 1.3 mm (0.039 to 0.051 in.)
- Check the electrode for carbon deposits.
Recommended:
SPARK PLUG SPECIFICATION TABLEManufacturer Spark Plug Type DENSO SK20R11 NGK IFR6A11 NOTE: If the electrode gap is larger than the standard, replace the spark plug. Do not adjust the electrode gap.NG: REPLACE SPARK PLUG
OK: Go to next step
- CHECK SPARK AND IGNITION
- Disconnect the injector connectors to prevent the engine starting.
- Install the spark plug to the ignition coil.
- Attach the spark plug to the cylinder head cover.
- Crank the engine within 2 seconds and check the spark.
OK: Spark occurs
NG: Go to step 5
OK: Go to next step
- CHECK WIRE HARNESS (IGNITION COIL - ECM)
- Disconnect the I1, I2, I3, I4, I5, I6, I7 and I8 ignition coil connectors.
- Disconnect the E4 ECM connector.
- Measure the resistance of the wire harness side connectors.
Standard:

- CHECK ECM (IGF1, IGF2 VOLTAGE)
- Disconnect the I1, I2, I3, I4, I5, I6, I7 and I8 ignition coil connectors.
- Turn the ignition switch ON.
- Measure the voltage of the ECM connector.
Standard:
ECM CONNECTOR - VOLTAGE TABLETester Connection Specified Condition E4-7 (IGF1) - E6-7 (E1) 4.5 to 5.5 V E4-6 (IGF2) - E6-7 (E1) 4.5 to 5.5 V NG: REPLACE ECM (See REPLACEMENT )
OK: REPLACE IGNITION COIL ASSY (See step 5 on REPLACEMENT )
- CHECK WIRE HARNESS (IGNITION COIL - ECM)
- Disconnect the I1, I2, I3, I4, I5, I6, I7 and I8 ignition coil connectors.
- Disconnect the E4 ECM and E5 connector.
- Measure the resistance of the wire harness side connectors.
Standard:

- CHECK ECM (IGT1, IGT2, IGT3, IGT4, IGT5, IGT6, IGT7, IGT8 VOLTAGE)
- Measure the voltage of the ECM connector when the engine is cranked.
Standard:

OK: Go to next step
- CHECK IGNITION COIL ASSY (POWER SOURCE)
- Disconnect the I1, I2, I3, I4, I5, I6, I7 and I8 ignition coil connectors.
- Turn the ignition switch ON and START position.
- Measure the voltage of the wire harness side connector.
Standard:
IGNITION COIL ASSY - VOLTAGE TABLETester Connection Specified Condition I1-1 - Body ground 9 to 14V I2-1 - Body ground 9 to 14V I3-1 - Body ground 9 to 14V I4-1 - Body ground 9 to 14V I5-1 - Body ground 9 to 14V I6-1 - Body ground 9 to 14V I7-1 - Body ground 9 to 14V I8-1 - Body ground 9 to 14V OK: REPLACE IGNITION COIL ASSY (See step 5 on REPLACEMENT )
NG: Go to next step
- CHECK WIRE HARNESS (IGNITION COIL - IG2 RELAY)
- Inspect the INJ fuse.
- Remove the INJ fuse from the engine room No. 1 R/B.
- Measure the resistance of the INJ fuse.
Standard: Below 1 Ω
- Disconnect the I1, I2, I3, I4, I5, I6, I7 and I8 ignition coil connectors.
- Remove the IG2 relay from the engine room No. 1 R/B.
- Measure the resistance of the wire harness side connectors.
Standard:
