Rear Axle Carrier Sub-ASSY LH (4WD): Replacement

HINT:

REAR SUSPENSION COMPONENTS: (See REAR SUSPENSION )

Replace the RH side using the same procedures as for the LH side.

  1. REMOVE REAR WHEEL 
  2. SEPARATE SPEED SENSOR REAR LH 
    1. Remove the bolt and separate the speed sensor from the axle carrier.
      NOTE:
      • Be careful not to damage the speed sensor.
      • Prevent foreign matter from adhering to the speed sensor.
  3. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT LH NUT 
    1. Using SST(s) and a hammer, unstake the staked part of the axle hub LH nut.

      SST 09930-00010

      NOTE: Loosen the staked part of the nut completely, otherwise the screw of the drive shaft may be damaged.
    2. While applying the brakes, remove the lock axle hub LH nut.

  4. SEPARATE REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSY LH 
    1. Remove the bolt, and separate the flexible hose from the shock absorber.
    2. Remove the 2 bolts and separate rear disc brake caliper assy.
      NOTE: Use a string or other device to keep the brake caliper from hanging down.

  5. REMOVE REAR DISC 
  6. REMOVE REAR AXLE HUB & BEARING ASSY LH 
    1. Remove the 4 bolts and the rear axle hub & bearing assy LH.

  7. SEPARATE HEIGHT CONTROL SENSOR SUB-ASSY REAR (W/AIR SUSPENSION) (See  REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSY NO. 2 LH (4WD)  ) 
  8. SEPARATE HEIGHT CONTROL SENSOR SUB-ASSY REAR (W/DISCHARGE HEAD LAMP) (See  HEIGHT CONTROL SENSOR SUB-ASSY REAR RH  ,  HEIGHT CONTROL SENSOR SUB-ASSY REAR RH  ) 

    HINT:

    Perform the procedure only when removing the RH side.

  9. SEPARATE REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSY NO. 1 LH 
    1. Using a jack, raise the rear axle carrier sub-assy LH, as shown in the illustration.

    2. Remove the bolt and nut, and separate the rear suspension arm assy No. 1 LH (rear axle carrier side) from the rear axle carrier.

      HINT:

      When removing the bolt, keep the nut from rotating.

  10. SEPARATE STRUT ROD ASSY REAR 
    1. Remove the bolt and nut, and separate the strut rod assy rear (rear axle carrier side) from rear axle carrier.

      HINT:

      When removing the bolt, keep the nut from rotating.

  11. SEPARATE REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSY NO. 2 LH 
    1. Remove the bolt and nut, and separate the rear suspension arm assy No. 2 LH (rear axle carrier side) from the rear axle carrier.

      HINT:

      When removing the bolt, keep the nut from rotating.

  12. REMOVE REAR AXLE CARRIER SUB-ASSY LH 
    1. Remove the 2 bolts and 2 nuts, and the rear axle carrier sub-assy LH from the shock absorber.

  13. INSTALL REAR AXLE CARRIER SUB-ASSY LH 
    1. Install the rear axle carrier sub-assy LH with the 2 bolts and nuts.

      Torque: 180 N.m (1,840 kgf.cm, 133 ft.lbf) 

      HINT:

      Insert the bolt from the rear side of the vehicle and temporarily install the nut to the shock absorber.

  14. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSY NO. 2 LH 
    1. Temporarily tighten the rear suspension arm assy No. 2 LH with the bolt and nut.

      HINT:

      Insert the bolt from the rear side of the vehicle and lightly tighten the bolt.

  15. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN STRUT ROD ASSY REAR 
    1. Temporarily tighten the strut rod assy rear with the bolt and nut.

      HINT:

      Insert the bolt from the inside of the vehicle and lightly tighten the bolt.

  16. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSY NO. 1 LH 
    1. Temporarily tighten the rear suspension arm assy No. 1 LH with the bolt and nut.

      HINT:

      Insert the bolt from the front side of the vehicle and lightly tighten the bolt.

  17. INSTALL HEIGHT CONTROL SENSOR SUB-ASSY REAR (W/AIR SUSPENSION) (See  REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSY NO. 2 LH (4WD)  ) 
  18. INSTALL HEIGHT CONTROL SENSOR SUB-ASSY REAR (W/DISCHARGE HEAD LAMP) (See  HEIGHT CONTROL SENSOR SUB-ASSY REAR RH  ,  HEIGHT CONTROL SENSOR SUB-ASSY REAR RH  ) 

    HINT:

    Perform the procedure only when installing the RH side.

  19. INSTALL REAR AXLE HUB & BEARING ASSY LH 
    1. Install the rear axle hub & bearing assy LH with the 4 bolts.

      Torque: 75 N.m (765 kgf.cm, 55 ft.lbf)

  20. INSPECT BEARING BACKLASH (See  ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION  ) 
  21. INSPECT AXLE HUB DEVIATION (See  ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION  ) 
  22. INSTALL REAR DISC 
  23. INSTALL REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSY LH 
    1. Install the rear disc brake caliper assy LH with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 78 N.m (800 kgf.cm, 58 ft.lbf) 

    2. Install the flexible hose with the bolt to the shock absorber.

      Torque: 19 N.m (192 kgf.cm, 14 ft.lbf)

  24. INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT LH NUT 
    1. Install a new axle shaft LH nut.

      Torque: 294 N.m, (3,000 kgf.cm, 217 ft.lbf) 

    2. Using a chisel and hammer, stake the axle shaft LH nut.

  25. INSTALL SPEED SENSOR REAR LH 
    1. Install the speed sensor with the bolt.

      Torque: 8.0 N.m (82 kgf.cm, 71 in.lbf) 

      NOTE:
      • Be careful not to damage the speed sensor.
      • Prevent foreign matter from adhering to the speed sensor.
      • Do not twist the sensor wire when installing the sensor.
  26. INSTALL REAR WHEEL 

    Torque: 103 N.m (1,050 kgf.cm, 76 ft.lbf) 

  27. STABILIZE SUSPENSION (See  STRUT ROD ASSY REAR  ) 
  28. FULLY TIGHTEN REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSY NO. 2 LH (See  REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSY NO. 2 LH (4WD)  ) 
  29. FULLY TIGHTEN STRUT ROD ASSY REAR (See  STRUT ROD ASSY REAR  ) 
  30. FULLY TIGHTEN REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSY NO. 1 LH (See  REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSY NO. 1 LH (4WD)  ) 
  31. INSPECT AND ADJUST REAR WHEEL ALIGNMENT (See  REAR WHEEL ALIGNMENT  ) 
  32. ADJUST VEHICLE HEIGHT (W/AIR SUSPENSION) (See  PRE-CHECK  ,  PRE-CHECK  ) 
  33. ADJUST HEADLIGHT AIM ONLY (W/DISCHARGE HEAD LAMP) (See  ADJUSTMENT  ,  ADJUSTMENT  ) 
  34. CHECK ABS SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL (See  PRE-CHECK  ,  PRE-CHECK  )
