OBD II scan tool (excluding hand-held tester):

  1. Check valve timing (Check for loose and jumped tooth of timing chain) (See  INSTALLATION  ). 
    1. NG: Adjust valve timing. 
    2. OK: Go to next step. 
  2. Check operation of OCV. 

    PREPARATION: 

    Start the engine.

    CHECK: 

    1. Check the engine speed when disconnecting the OCV connector.
    2. Check the engine speed when applying battery positive voltage between the terminate of the OCV.

    RESULT:

    1. 2: Go to step   4 . 
    2. 1: Go to next step. 
  3. Check if DTC output reoccurs. 

    PREPARATION: 

    1. Clear the DTCs.

      Operate the OBD II scan tool to erase the codes, or disconnect the battery terminal or remove the EFI fuse for more than 60 seconds.

    2. Start and warm up the engine.
    3. Drive the vehicle around for 10 minutes or more.

    CHECK: 

    Read output DTCs using the OBD II scan tool.

    OK: 

    No DTC output. 

    1. OK: VVT system OK* 

      *: DTCs P0011 and P0012 are output when a foreign object in the engine oil enters the system returns to normal after a short time. Foreign objects are filtered out by the oil filter.

    2. NG: Replace ECM (See  HOW TO USE THE DIAGNOSTIC CHART AND INSPECTION PROCEDURE  ). 
  4. Check voltage between terminals OCV + and OCV - of ECM connector. 

    Reference: INSPECTION USING OSCILLOSCOPE 

    Turn the ignition switch ON, and check waveform between terminals OCV + and OCV - of the ECM connector.

    HINT:

    The correct waveform is as shown.

    1. NG: Replace ECM (See  HOW TO USE THE DIAGNOSTIC CHART AND INSPECTION PROCEDURE  .) 
    2. OK: Go to next step. 
  5. Check off control valve filter. 
    1. NG: Replace oil control valve filter. 
    2. OK: Go to next step. 
  6. Check OCV (See  INSPECTION  ). 
    1. OK: Go to step   8 . 
    2. OK: Go to next step. 
  7. Replace OCV. 

    GO: Go to next step. 

  8. Check VVT controller assembly. 

    PREPARATION: 

    1. Remove the timing belt cover.
    2. Remove the ECM hood.
    3. Remove the OCV.

    5. Drain the oil in the VVT controller assembly (See REMOVAL ).

    CHECK: 

    Check whether the oil in the VVT controller assembly is drained or not.

    OK: 

    Oil in VVT controller assembly is drained. 

    1. OK: Go to step   10 . 
    2. OK: Go to next step. 
  9. Replace VVT controller assembly 

    GO: Go to next step. 

  10. Check blockage of OCV, oil check valve and oil pipe No.1. 
    1. NG: Repair or replace. 
    2. OK: Go to next step. 
  11. Check whether or not DTC P0011 or P0012 is stored. 

    PREPARATION: 

    1. Clear the DTCs.

      Operate the OBD II scan tool to erase the codes, or disconnect the battery terminal or remove the EFI fuse for more than 60 seconds.

    2. Start and warm up the engine.
    3. Drive the vehicle around for 10 minutes or more.

    CHECK: 

    Read output DTC using the OBD II scan tool.

    OK: 

    No DTC output. 

    1. OK: VVT system is OK.* 

      *: DTCs P0011 and P0012 are output when a foreign object in the engine oil enters the system. These codes will stay even if the system returns to normal after a short time. Foreign objects are filtered out by the oil filter.

    2. NG: Go to next step. 

      Replace ECM (See  HOW TO USE THE DIAGNOSTIC CHART AND INSPECTION PROCEDURE  ).
