Engine Mechanical (2UZ-FE): Adjustment

  1. INSPECT COOLANT (See  COOLING SYSTEM (2UZ-FE)  ) 
  2. INSPECT ENGINE OIL (See  LUBRICATION SYSTEM  ) 
  3. INSPECT BATTERY SPECIFIC GRAVITY (See  REMOVAL & INSTALLATION  ) 
  4. INSPECT AIR CLEANER FILTER ELEMENT SUB-ASSY 
  5. INSPECT FAN AND GENERATOR V BELT 

    HINT:

    The belt tensioner coordinates a belt tension automatically by its mechanism, you do not need to adjust it by yourself.

    1. Check that the indicator mark on the automatic tensioner is within the A range as shown in the illustration.
    2. When the mark is out of the standard range, exchange the V belt with new one.

  6. INSPECT V-RIBBED BELT TENSIONER ASSY (See  FAN AND GENERATOR V BELT  ) 
  7. WARM UP ENGINE 
  8. INSPECT IGNITION TIMING

    1. When using the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool:
      1. Connect the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool to the DLC3.
      2. Please refer to the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool's operator manual for further details.
      1. Ignition timing: 8 - 12° BTDC at idle (Transmission in neutral position) 
    2. Disconnect the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool from the DLC3.
  9. When not using hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool.
    1. Remove the V-bank cover.
    2. Connect the tester probe of a timing light to the wire of the ignition coil connector for No. 1 cylinder.

    3. Using SST, connect tachometer probe to terminal TAC of the DLC3.
      1. SST 09843-18030

    4. Using a SST, connect the terminals TC and CG of the DLC3.

    5. Using the timing light, check the ignition timing.
      1. Ignition timing: 8 - 12° BTDC @ idle (Transmission in neutral position) 
    6. Remove the SST from the DLC3.
    7. Disconnect the timing light from the engine.
    8. Install V-bank cover.

  10. INSPECT ENGINE IDLE SPEED 
    1. When using hand-held tester.
      1. Connect the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool to the DLC3.
      2. Please refer to the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool's operator manual for further details.
      3. Run the engine at 2,500 RPM for approx. 90 seconds.
      4. Check the idle speed.
        1. Idle speed: 700 +/- 50 RPM 

        If the idle speed is not as specified, check the air intake system.

      5. Disconnect the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool from the DLC3.

    2. When not using the hand-held tester.
      1. Using a SST, connect the tachometer probe to the terminal TAC of the DLC3.

      2. Please refer to the LEXUS hand-held tester operator's manual for further details.
      3. Run the engine at 2,500 RPM for approx. 90 seconds.
      4. Check the idle speed.
        1. Idle speed: 700 +/- 50 RPM 
      5. Remove the SST from the DLC3.
      6. Disconnect the tachometer from the DLC3.
  11. INSPECT COMPRESSION 
    1. Remove the V-bank cover sub-assy.
    2. Remove the air cleaner hose assy.
    3. Disconnect the throttle control motor connector.
    4. Remove the 8 ignition coils.
    5. Remove the 8 spark plugs.
    6. Disconnect the 8 injector connectors.
    7. Inspect the cylinder compression pressure.
      1. Insert a compression gauge into the spark plug hole.
      2. Fully open the throttle forcibly by hand.
      3. While cranking the engine, measure the compression pressure.

        HINT:

        Always use a fully charged battery to obtain engine speed of 250 RPM or more.

      4. Repeat steps (1) through (3) for each cylinder.
        NOTE: This measurement must be done as quickly as possible.
        1. Compression pressure: 1,226 kPa (12.5 kgf/cm 2  ,178 psi) or more 
        2. Minimum pressure: 981 kPa (10.0 kgf/cm2,142 psi) 
        3. Difference between each cylinder: 98 kPa (1.0 kgf/cm 2  ,14 psi) or less 
      5. If the cylinder compression in one or more cylinders is low, pour small amount of engine oil into the cylinder through the spark plug hole and repeat steps through (1) to (3) for cylinders with low compression.
        • If adding oil helps the compression, the piston rings and/or cylinder bore may be worn or damaged.
        • If pressure stays low, a valve may be sticking or seating is improper, or there may be leakage past the gasket.
    8. Connect the 8 injector connectors,
    9. Install the 8 spark plugs.
    10. Install the 8 ignition coils.
    11. Connect the throttle control motor connector.
    12. Install the air cleaner hose assy.
    13. Install the V-bank cover sub-assy.
  12. INSPECT CO/HC 

    HINT:

    This check is used only to determine whether or not the idle CO/HC complies with regulations.

    1. Start the engine.
    2. Sustain the engine speed at 2,500 RPM for approx. 180 seconds.
    3. Insert CO/HC meter testing probe at least 40 cm (1.3 ft) into tailpipe during idling.
    4. Immediately check CO/HC concentration at idle and/or 2,500 RPM.

    HINT:

    When performing the 2 mode (2,500 RPM and idle) test, follow the measurement order are prescribed by the applicable local regulations.

    If the CO/HC concentration does not comply with the regulations, troubleshoot in the order given below.

    1. Check the heated oxygen sensor operation (See DTC P0130 OXYGEN SENSOR CIRCUIT (BANK 1 SENSOR 1), DTC P0150 OXYGEN SENSOR CIRCUIT (BANK 2 SENSOR 1), DTC P2195 OXYGEN SENSOR SIGNAL STUCK LEAN (BANK 1 SENSOR 1), DTC P2196 OXYGEN SENSOR SIGNAL STUCK RICH (BANK 1 SENSOR 1), DTC P2197 OXYGEN SENSOR SIGNAL STUCK LEAN (BANK 2 SENSOR 1), DTC P2198 OXYGEN SENSOR SIGNAL STUCK RICH (BANK 2 SENSOR 1) and DTC P0136 OXYGEN SENSOR CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION (BANK 1 SENSOR 2), DTC P0156 OXYGEN SENSOR CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION (BANK 2 SENSOR 2) ).
    2. See the table below for possible causes, then inspect and correct the applicable causes if necessary.
