OBD II scan tool (excluding hand-held tester):
- CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSE AND A JUMPED TOOTH OF TIMING BELT) (See TIMING BELT (3MZ-FE)
)
NG: ADJUST VALVE TIMING (See TIMING BELT (3MZ-FE) )
OK: GO TO NEXT STEP.
- CHECK OPERATION OF OCV
- Start the engine.
- Check the engine speed with (1) and (2).
- Disconnect the V9 or V10 OCV connector.
- Apply the battery positive voltage between the terminals of the OCV.
Result:
- Reconnect the OCV connector.
B: Go to step 4
A: GO TO NEXT STEP.
- CHECK IF DTC OUTPUT REOCCURS
- Clear the DTCs.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable or remove the EFI and ETCS fuses for more than 60 seconds.
NOTE: When disconnecting the battery cable, perform the "INITIALIZE" procedure (see PRECAUTION ). - Start and warm up the engine.
- Drive the vehicle around for 10 minutes or more.
- Read output DTC using the OBD II scan tool.
Standard: No DTC output.
HINT:
(*) DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 is output when a foreign object in engine oil is caught in some part of the system. These codes will stay registered even if the system returns to normal after a short time. Foreign objects are filtered out by the oil filter.
OK: VVT SYSTEM OK (*)
NG: GO TO NEXT STEP.
- Clear the DTCs.
- INSPECT ECM (OCV SIGNAL)
- Inspect using the oscilloscope.
- During idling, check the waveform between the specified terminals of the E8 ECM connectors.

OK: GO TO NEXT STEP.
- CHECK OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER
NG: REPLACE OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER
OK: GO TO NEXT STEP.
- INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSY (OCV) (See INSPECTION

OK: Go to step 8
NG: GO TO NEXT STEP.
- REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSY (OCV)
GO: GO TO NEXT STEP.
- CHECK CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR ASSY (See CAMSHAFT (RH BANK) (3MZ-FE)
or CAMSHAFT (LH BANK) (3MZ-FE)
)
OK: Go to step 10
NG: GO TO NEXT STEP.
- REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR ASSY
GO: GO TO NEXT STEP.
- CHECK FOR BLOCKAGE (OCV, OIL CHECK VALVE AND OIL HOLE)
NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE
OK: GO TO NEXT STEP.
- CHECK IF DTC OUTPUT REOCCURS
- Clear the DTCs.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable or remove the EFI and ETCS fuses for more than 60 seconds.
