Rear Axle Shafts (AWD): Removal
CAUTION:
To prevent damage to axle hub bearing, DO NOT subject hub bearing to vehicle weight with axle shaft removed. If vehicle must be moved with axle shaft removed, install a bolt, nut, a small washer (outboard) and a large washer/bearing retainer (inboard) in place of axle shaft.
- Raise and support vehicle.
- Remove rear wheel.
- Remove 2 bolts and remove exhaust tailpipe. Remove gasket.
- Remove bolt and ABS speed sensor from rear axle carrier.
- Remove cotter pin and lock cap. While applying brakes, remove axle shaft hub nut.
- Place mating marks on axle shaft and differential side gear shaft.
- Remove 4 nuts and washers to disconnect axle shaft from side gear. See Fig 1.
- Remove axle shaft from axle carrier.
