Diagnosis & Repair

  1. If using OBD-II scan tool, go to step  4. If using hand-held tester, start the engine and warm it up. Connect the hand-held tester and select the VVT from the ACTIVE TEST menu. Check the engine speed when operating the OCV by the hand-held tester. If VVT system is OFF (OCV is OFF), engine speed is normal. If VVT system is ON (OCV is ON), idle is rough or engine stalls. If okay, problem is intermittent. If not okay, go to next step.
  2. Start the engine and warm it up. Disconnect the OCV connector. Apply battery positive voltage between the terminals of the OCV. See Fig 1. Check the engine speed. If rough idle or engine stalls, go to next step. If not, replace OCV.

  3. Check voltage between terminals OCV+ and OCV- of ECM connector. Turn the ignition switch ON, and check waveform between terminals OCV+ and OCV- of the ECM connector. The waveform frequency is lengthened as the engine speed becomes higher. See Fig 2. If not, check and replace ECM. If okay, check for open and short in harness and connector between OCV and ECM. Repair as necessary. If okay, check for intermittent problems.

  4. If using OBD-II scan tool, start the engine and warm it up. Disconnect OCV connector. Apply battery voltage between OCV connector terminals. See Fig 1. If engine speed is normal, replace OVC. If idle is rough or engine stalls, go to next step.
  5. Turn the ignition switch ON, and check the waveform between terminals OCV+ and OCV- of the ECM connector. The waveform frequency is lengthened as the engine speed becomes higher. See Fig 2. If okay, go to next step. If not okay, check and replace ECM.
  6. Check for open and short in harness and connector between OCV and ECM. Repair or replace harness or connector as necessary. If harness or connector are okay, check for intermittent problems.
