Brake Pedal Height & Free Play
- Measure pedal height from floor board to face of pedal pad. See BRAKE PEDAL HEIGHT & FREE PLAY SPECIFICATIONS . If pedal height is incorrect, go to next step.
- On ES 300, IS 300, LS 430 and RX 300, remove undercover panel, lower pad and air duct.
- On GS 300 and GS 430, remove left side under cover, end pad, safety pad and heater to register duct.
- On SC 430, remove instrument lower finish panel.
- On LX 470, remove the scuff plate, cowl side trim, lower No. 1 panel, left lower panel, and No. 2 heater to register duct. See Fig 1. Remove the steering wheel pad, steering wheel lower No. 2 and No. 3 covers, steering wheel, combination switch, column upper and lower covers, steering column assembly and thrust stopper. See appropriate STEERING COLUMNS article in STEERING.
- On all models, disconnect stop light switch harness connector. Loosen stoplight switch lock nut, and remove stoplight switch.
- Loosen brake pedal-to-power brake unit push rod lock nut.
- Adjust pedal height by turning brake pedal push rod.
- Tighten push rod lock nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install stop light switch and connect brake light switch harness connector.
- Push in brake pedal .2-.59" (5-15 mm) and turn stop light switch to lock the nut in position where brake light goes off.
- After installation, push in brake pedal .2-.59" (5-15 mm) and check that brake light illuminates.
- Stop engine. Depress brake pedal several times until power brake unit is depleted. Push brake pedal by hand until a second point of resistance is felt, then measure the difference. Ensure pedal free play is as specified. See BRAKE PEDAL HEIGHT & FREE PLAY SPECIFICATIONS .
- If incorrect, check stop light switch clearance. See STOP LIGHT SWITCH CLEARANCE . If clearance is OK, trouble shoot brake system.
- Install steering and instrument panel components as necessary.
