Inspection (Except LS 430)

  1. Inspect disassembled parts for wear, rust or damage.
  2. Measure parking shoe lining thickness. If lining thickness is at minimum thickness or less, or if there is severe and uneven wear, replace brake shoe. See PARKING BRAKE SPECIFICATIONS  table.
  3. Using a brake drum gauge or equivalent, measure parking brake drum inside diameter. Replace disc if inside diameter is at maximum or more. See PARKING BRAKE SPECIFICATIONS  table. Replace disc or grind it with a lathe if disc is scored or worn unevenly.
  4. Apply chalk to inside surface of disc, then grind down brake shoe lining to fit. If contact between disc and brake shoe lining is improper, repair it using a brake shoe grinder or replace brake shoe assembly.
  5. Using a feeler gauge, measure clearance between parking brake shoe and lever. Standard clearance is less than .0138" (.35mm). If clearance is not within specification, replace shim with one of correct size. See PARKING BRAKE SPECIFICATIONS  table. If necessary, use a screwdriver and remove C-washer and shim.
  6. If necessary, install correct size shim and new C-washer. Recheck clearance.
