Shock Absorber And Spring Assembly (G2296772): Removal

WARNING:

The spring is under extreme tension, care must be taken at all times. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
The components may be heavy or awkward to handle. The assistance of another technician will be required.

NOTE:

This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending on the vehicle specification, but the essential information is always correct.
This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.

Remove the engine compartment cross brace.
Refer to: ENGINE COMPARTMENT CROSS BRACE .
Raise and support the vehicle on a suitable 2 post lift.
Refer to: JACKING AND LIFTING .
Remove the wheel knuckle.
Refer to: WHEEL KNUCKLE .

- Remove the bolt.
- Reposition the brake hose mounting bracket.

- Remove and discard the nut.
- Reposition the stabilizer bar link.

Disconnect and release the shock absorber wiring harness.

- Remove the 3 bolts.
- Remove the shock absorber and spring assembly from the vehicle.

Note the alignment of the bearing.

NOTE: Do not disassemble further if the component is removed for access only.

Remove the wiring harness.

Release the shock absorber boot.
WARNING: Always follow the spring compressor manufacturer's instructions.

CAUTION: Take care not to damage the protective coating of the spring.

Using a suitable tool, compress the spring until the shock absorber is free from tension.

General Equipment: Suspension Spring Compressor

Remove and discard the nut from the top of the shock absorber.

- Disassemble the shock absorber and spring assembly noting the order in which the components are removed.
- Inspect the components and renew if damaged or worn.
