Lower Airbag

In North American Specification (NAS) markets the driver and the passenger have an additional lower airbag. The lower airbags have a single stage inflator. The module has an integral door and is attached to the lower trim panel beneath the steering column on the driver side. On the passenger side the module located under the glovebox panel. Weak points in the door break in a controlled manner to allow the door to bend downward when the airbag deploys.

The lower airbags provides protection for knees and tibia when deployed during a front or rear impact.
