Pinpoint Test G: Active Grille Air Shutter Rattle Noise
- G1: IDENTIFICATION OF WHICH ACTIVE GRILLE IS RATTLING
- Set the vehicle into active grille wash mode sequence by starting the engine, set the vehicle into sand mode. After 20 seconds the active grille will open. Repeat this process to replicate the "rattle" noise and determine if the rattling is coming from the upper or lower active grille
Does the rattling noise come from the upper active grille?
Yes: If the rattling noise is coming from the upper active grille GO to G2.
No: If the rattling noise is coming from the lower active grille GO to G3.
- Set the vehicle into active grille wash mode sequence by starting the engine, set the vehicle into sand mode. After 20 seconds the active grille will open. Repeat this process to replicate the "rattle" noise and determine if the rattling is coming from the upper or lower active grille
- G2: RATTLE NOISE - REPAIR PROCESS FOR THE UPPER ACTIVE GRILLE
- Remove the front bumper radiator grille for access only (see FRONT BUMPER (G2299900)
- steps 1 to 13)
- Remove the upper active grille for access only
- Hold the upper active grille vane pack with two hands and gently shake it to allow identification of the rattle noise location. This could either be the frame of the grille rattling against the outer frame or the individual grille elements rubbing against each other when closing
- Apply thin felt tape to the back of the grille elements (as illustrated), making sure it does not interfere with motion of grille elements. Make sure to trim off any excess felt that remains unglued to the vane. Generic tape no more than 2 mm thick should be used and any excess width not glued to the part should be cut away and removed
- Before re-installing the front bumper, repeat Step G1 (see above) to confirm if the active grille is now working properly
Is the active grille now working properly?
Yes: Re-install the front armature and front bumper (see REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION - Front Armature/Front Bumper)
No: Replace the upper active grille. Retest. If issue is resolved, re-install the front armature and front bumper (see REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION - Front Armature/Front Bumper)
- Remove the front bumper radiator grille for access only (see FRONT BUMPER (G2299900)
- steps 1 to 13)
- G3: RATTLE NOISE - REPAIR PROCESS FOR THE LOWER ACTIVE GRILLE
- Remove the front bumper radiator grille for access only (see FRONT BUMPER (G2299900)
- steps 1 to 13)
- Remove the lower active grille for access only
- Hold the lower active grille vane pack with two hands and gently shake it to allow identification of the rattle noise location. This could either be the frame of the grille rattling against the outer frame or the individual grille elements rubbing against each other when closing
