Power Transfer Unit
The Power Transfer Unit (PTU) comprises a main housing, a right side cover, dog clutch and cam ring actuator.
Within the housing the main components are the following:
- A crown wheel drive gear and shaft.
- A pinion drive gear and shaft.
- An input shaft.
- A dog clutch assembly cam ring actuator.
The PTU is located at the rear of the engine and is attached directly to the right of the transmission housing. A bracket on the PTU attaches the unit to the engine cylinder block.
When required, the PTU transfers the output from the transmission and distributes it to the rear wheels through a 2-piece driveshaft to the RDU. The front halfshafts are driven from the transmission front differential, not the PTU.
The PTU contains a dog clutch and brake to disconnect the AWD upstream of the PTU hypoid gears.
The PTU is equipped with a Driveline Disconnect Control Module (DDCM), which controls the PTU motor for connecting and disconnecting. This is linked to, and controlled by the AWDCM.
