Rear Drive HALFSHAFTS - Vehicles With: MHEV/Non-Electric Vehicles (G2298403): Operation
When the vehicle is in motion the rear knuckles with the wheel hub move up and down. From the Rear Drive Unit (RDU) side gears the engine torque goes through the rear halfshafts to the rear wheel hubs. The Constant Velocity (CV) joints allow the halfshaft to transmit power through a wide range of CV joint angle. The inner CV joint is a plunging joint and is able to compensate for the suspension axial movements. The rear halfshaft CV joints have to follow all the movements of the knuckle and the RDU and provide uninterrupted power transmission all the time. The CV joints do this at a constant rotational speed, without a considerable increase in friction.
