The rear halfshafts are located between the Rear Drive Unit (RDU) and the relevant rear wheel hub. Each halfshaft comprises of a tubular shaft with inner and outer Constant Velocity (CV) joints on each end. The CV joints are universal joints which are able to transfer torque at large angles efficiently and smoothly.
Both CV joint are the 'ball and socket' type with a splined connection between the joint and the shaft. The halfshaft is connected to the RDU side gear via a splined connection secured with a circlip. The outer joints connect to the wheel hubs via a splined connection, secured with a threaded nut. The CV joints are greased to provide lubrication for the CV joint components. The CV joint boots prevent dirt and water ingress into the CV joint.
The rear halfshaft CV joint boots and the outer CV joints are serviceable items for this assembly.
