Carbon Fiber Hood Delamination Repair (G2944870): Activation

CAUTION: This procedure must be completed by an approved Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) body shop.
NOTE: This procedure is applicable to vehicles with Carbon Fiber hood panel.
    • The following parts will be required:
    • Right hood vent - LR122985 - x1
    • Left hood vent - LR122986 - x1
    • NOTE: Repair procedures are under constant review, and therefore times are subject to change; those quoted here must be taken as guidance only. Use TOPIx to obtain the latest repair time.

      The below SRO can be claimed for body/paint repairs to exposed carbon fiber hoods:

    • Description:  Hood vents - Renew - Including local respray
    • SRO:  76.16.89.36
    • Time (hours):  0.8
    • Condition code:  P2
    • Causal part:  LR122985/LR122986

    • The illustration shows an example of a delaminated hood, in the area surrounding the hood vents.
    • If similar delamination is present  on the hood, in the area surrounding the hood vents, complete steps 4 to 17  .
    • If similar delamination is not present  on the hood, in the area surrounding the hood vents, complete step 4 followed by step 17  .
  2. Remove and discard both hood vents. Complete hood removal step 2 followed by hood removal steps 12 and 13.

  3. NOTE: This procedure does not show you how to repair damage to the carbon fiber. If the carbon fiber is damaged, the hood may need to be replaced.
    • Inspect the area where the delamination is present and inspect the carbon fiber substrate for any damage, if damage is present to the carbon fiber substrate, you may need to replace the hood, raise a Technical Assistance (TA) for further assistance first.
    • If only the lacquer is damaged, and not the carbon fiber substrate, continue to step 6  .
  4. If the carbon fiber hood is fully painted in color, repair as per the normal paint chip process. If the hood has the exposed carbon fiber center section option, continue to step 7  .
  5. Apply a strong masking tape to the chipped area and pull it away to remove any loose materials/contaminates.
  6. CAUTION: Take extreme care not to cut into the gel coat or carbon fiber.

    Using a razor blade, carefully remove the lacquer that has separated from the carbon fiber.

  7. Clean the chipped area using plastic cleaner.
  8. Apply masking tape and paper to the surrounding area for protection.
  9. Apply a clear adhesion promoter to the area with a suitable brush.
  10. Apply an approved high solids lacquer to the chipped area with a suitable brush and build up to be higher than the surrounding area.
  11. Allow the lacquer to cure, then lightly block sand the surface flat with 800 grit paper.
  12. Apply additional coats as required to fill in the chipped area.
  13. Sand the top coat with 1000 grit paper.
  14. Hand polish the area to a finish equal to the rest of the hood.
  15. Install both  new hood vents. Complete hood installation steps 1 and 2 followed by hood installation step 13.
