The crankshaft pulley with integrated mass damper is located on the front of the crankshaft. An o-ring seal provides a seal between the crankshaft pulley hub bore and the crankshaft front outer diameter. The o-ring seal prevents oil leakage during engine operation. The crankshaft pulley is aligned on a roll pin that is press installed into the front of the crankshaft. The crankshaft pulley is secured with 4 bolts to the crankshaft.
Engines with a generator
The crankshaft pulley provides the accessory drive to the coolant pump drive belt for the following:
- The variable coolant pump
- The generator
- The Air Conditioning (A/C) compressor.
Engines with the Belt Integrated Starter Generator (BISG)
The crankshaft pulley provides the accessory drive to the 2 drive belts for the following:
- The coolant pump drive belt for the variable coolant pump.
- The BISG drive belt to drive the following:
- The BISG
- The A/C compressor.
The mass damper integrated into the crankshaft pulley dampens vibration in the crankshaft produced by the combustion process. Each time a cylinder fires, torque is applied to the crankshaft through the pistons and connecting rods. The crankshaft deflects in reaction to the torque which creates a vibration when the torque is dissipated. The mass damper absorbs the vibration, reducing fatigue damage to the crankshaft.
The crankshaft pulley has a timing mark for setting timing for various components. When the timing mark aligns to the front cover assembly timing feature, the crankshaft is 50° After Top Dead Center (ATDC) for number 1 cylinder.
The crankshaft pulley with integrated mass damper is not a serviceable component.
