Rear Drive Axle And Differential - Vehicles With: Active Driveline (G2298401): Overview

The active driveline system comprises a Power Transfer Unit (PTU), a 2-piece driveshaft and a double clutch Rear Drive Unit (RDU). The system is controlled by the All Wheel Drive Control Module (AWDCM), AWDBCM and the Driveline Disconnect Control Module (DDCM). The PTU and RDU are electro-mechanically operated by individual motors.

The active driveline is able to disconnect the entire driveline using 3 points of disconnection:

This allows Front Wheel Drive (FWD) only, providing maximum fuel economy.

A control strategy continuously monitors key vehicle and environmental parameters. If the requirements for All Wheel Drive (AWD) are met, the system reconnects the AWD system. This is done through a dog clutch in the PTU and by closing the clutches in the RDU.

No driver intervention is required with active driveline. If the driver has selected a Terrain Response (TR) special program, the system automatically engages and/or maintains AWD. System operation is displayed to the driver through a graphical display in the Touchscreen (TS).

In addition to the disconnect function the RDU also acts as an electric rear differential. The RDU combines drive vectoring and limited slip differential technology for active torque biasing.
