Park Assist
- Park assist is a driving aid only. The driver is responsible for driving with due care and attention during parking maneuvers. Driver distraction can lead to accidents, potentially causing serious injury or death.
- Park assist sensors may not detect moving objects, such as children and animals, until the objects are dangerously close. Always use extreme caution when maneuvering, and always use the door and rear view mirrors. Failing to do so can lead to accidents, potentially causing serious injury or death.
- All sensors must be kept clean and free from debris or obstructions. For example, leaves, mud, snow, ice, frost, or insects. Failure to keep the sensors clean may result in sensor miscalculation or false indications that can lead to accidents, potentially causing serious injury or death.
- The driver must maintain full control of the accelerator and brake pedals throughout the parking maneuver. Driver distraction can lead to accidents, potentially causing serious injury or death.
- Park assist sensors may not detect some obstructions, for example, narrow posts, small objects close to the ground, and mesh fences. In some circumstances, bicycles or motorcycles parked alongside the curb may not be detected. Objects above sensor level may not be detected, for example, when approaching a flatbed truck, the protruding part of the flatbed may not be detected.
- Do not use parking exit when leaving a perpendicular parking space. Parking exit is programed for leaving only a parallel parking space. Damage to the vehicle, or surrounding objects, may occur if parking exit is used when leaving a perpendicular parking space.
- All sensors must be kept clean and free from debris or obstructions, for example, leaves, mud, snow, ice, frost, or insects. Failure to keep the sensors clean may result in sensor miscalculation or false indications.
- The driver must maintain full control of the accelerator and brake pedals throughout the parking maneuver.
- To cancel a park assist maneuver, at any point, hold or turn the steering wheel. Alternatively, touch the park assist soft key.
- All of the doors and the tailgate must be securely closed when using park assist.
- During any park assist maneuver, the parking aid system remains active and emits a audible warning when objects are detected close to the vehicle.
Park assist is an aid to maneuver the vehicle in and out of a parallel parking space and perpendicular parking space. Once the park assist system identifies a parking space with its ultrasonic sensors, it automatically steers the vehicle into place. Park assist takes control of the vehicle's steering system to maneuver the vehicle. The driver must continue to operate the brakes, the accelerator and gear selection. Informative graphics and messages are displayed on the Touchscreen (TS), to guide the driver through each stage of the maneuver.
Vehicles with park assist have a separate switch to activate the system.
The park assist system has 3 modes:
- Parallel parking: For reversing into a parking space that is parallel to the vehicle.
- Perpendicular parking: For reversing into a parking space that is at a 90° angle to the vehicle.
- Parking exit: For exiting only a parallel parking space.

Touch the park assist soft key to activate the park assist system. The soft key illuminates when park assist is enabled. A second touch of the soft key turns the system OFF. The soft key will not be illuminated. The park assist system can be cancelled at any time by touching the park assist soft key or the cancel soft key.
Park assist only uses ultrasonic sensors:
- Sensors (quantity 4) in the front bumper (parking aid sensors).
- Sensors (quantity 2) positioned on the outer sides of the front bumper to detect available parking spaces.
- Sensors (quantity 4) in the rear bumper (parking aid sensors).
- Sensors (quantity 2) on the outer sides of the rear bumper.
The park assist sensors are hardwired connected to the Parking Assist Control Module (PAM). Scanned information is constantly transmitted to the PAM.
When the park assist system is active, the system automatically selects a parking space and the required parking maneuver. The driver can change the selected parking space and maneuver by touching the parallel/perpendicular parking soft key. For example, parallel parking is automatically selected, touching the parallel/perpendicular soft key changes from parallel parking to perpendicular parking.
Parking exit can only be used when the vehicle is parallel parked. It must not be used in a perpendicular parking space. Select parking exit by touching the parking exit soft key.
Park Assist
Park assist must not be used if:
- A temporary spare wheel is in use.
- A sensor is damaged, or the bumper is damaged sufficiently to affect a sensor mounting point.
- A sensor is obstructed by items attached to the vehicle, for example, bumper covers, a bicycle rack, a trailer, stickers.
- The vehicle is being used to transport a load that extends beyond the vehicle perimeter, for example, a trailer.
The park assist system must maintain a distance of 0.5 m to 1.5 m (1.5 feet to 5 feet). The distance of 0.5 m to 1.5 m (1.5 feet to 5 feet) is between the vehicle and the row of parked vehicles or obstacles. The park assist system may not detect a suitable parking space if the distances are not maintained.
The park assist system assesses the size of parking spaces as the vehicle moves forward. The park assist automatic search operates when the vehicle speed is less than 30 km/h (18 mph). When park assist is selected, a parking space may already have been detected. If the detected parking space is suitable, the detected parking space icon will display 'green'. The TS displays an instruction message. If there is more than 1 parking space the driver selects either the selected parking space or a preferred parking space using the TS.
A suitable parking space may be rejected by the park assist system if there are vehicles which may interfere with the maneuver. The driver can turn park assist OFF and park the vehicle without the park assist system.
Parking exit
It is only possible to select parking exit if the vehicle is parallel parked. Parking exit will not maneuver from a perpendicular parking space.
The driver must follow the instructions on the Touchscreen (TS) when parking exit is selected.
The park assist systems determines the most appropriate side for the parking exit maneuver. The driver may override this by operating the turn signal to the side the driver wants to leave the space.
Parking exit operates only if another vehicle is either:
- Parked in front of the vehicle.
- Parked in front of and behind the vehicle.
The park assist maneuver may be cancelled at any time if:
- The park assist soft key is touched.
- The cancel soft key is touched.
- The parking aid system has detected an object that sounds an audible warning longer than 10 seconds.
- The Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) operates.
- The park assist maneuver has exceeded the maximum of 7 shuffles.
- The park assist instructions are not followed.
- PARK (P) is selected for more than 10 minutes.
- The vehicle speed is greater than 7 km/h (4 mph).
- Wade sensing is enabled.
If a park assist system fault is detected, a continuous audible warning sounds and the Instrument Cluster (IC) displays a warning message. If all of the sensors are clean and the fault is not rectified after an ignition cycle, contact a retailer/authorised repairer.
The park assist system is not available if:
- Vehicle speed is greater than 30 km/h (18 mph).
- All Terrain Progress Control (ATPC) is active (if equipped).
- Wade sensing is active (if equipped).
- REVERSE (R) gear is selected.
- Off Road suspension height is selected.
- A trailer is connected.
- There is a system fault.
- Park assist sensors may not detect some obstructions. For example, narrow posts, small objects close to the ground, mesh fences and, in some circumstances, bicycles or motor cycles parked alongside the curb.
- All sensors must be kept clean and free from debris or obstructions, for example, leaves, mud, snow, ice, frost or insects. Failure to keep the sensors clean may result in sensor miscalculation or false indications.
The park assist system may provide inaccurate results if:
- The size or shape of the parking space changes after it was measured.
- There is an irregular curb alongside the parking space, or the curb is covered with leaves, snow.
- The vehicle is being used to transport a load that extends beyond the perimeter of the vehicle.
- The sensors are misaligned due to a minor collision or impact.
- The vehicle had a repair or alteration that was not approved by a retailer/authorised repairer.
- The vehicle is equipped with non-approved wheels or tires.
- The vehicle's tire pressures are not set to the vehicle's recommended specification.
- The vehicle tires have significant tire wear.
- The vehicle is equipped with replacement tires. After the normal running-in period, the system adapts to the replacement tires.
- The parking space is located on a corner or bend.
- The sensors are dirty or covered in mud, ice, or snow.
- The weather is foggy, raining, or snowing.
- The road surface is uneven or rutted.
- The vehicle encounters an obstruction that is thin or wedge shaped.
- The vehicle encounters an obstruction that is elevated and/or protruding, such as ledges or tree branches.
- A non-approved towbar or trailer hitch is equipped.
- The sensors are in close proximity to hot exhaust gasses from nearby vehicles.
- The sensors are in close proximity to noise generated from emergency vehicles, motorbikes.
- The sensors have been damaged during vehicle cleaning.
Park assist may not operate correctly if:
- The park assist system is not activated.
- The vehicle may be travelling above 30 km/h (18 mph).
- The sensors may be covered or partly obscured by dirt, mud, ice, or snow.
- The approach angle may not be suitable.
The Park Assist system may not offer a certain parking space if:
- The sensors may be covered or partly obscured by dirt, mud, ice, or snow.
- The parking space may not be large enough to accommodate the vehicle.
- There may not be enough space on the opposite side of the vehicle for the front to swing out during the maneuver.
- The vehicle may have been driven more than 1.5 m (4.9 feet) from the row of parked vehicles.
- The vehicle may have been driven less than 0.41 m (1.3 feet) from the row of parked vehicles.
- The vehicle may have been driven in REVERSE (R). Park assist searches for a parking space only when the vehicle is in DRIVE (D).
- The approach angle may not be suitable.
Park assist may not position a vehicle in a suitable parking space because 1 or more of the limitations have been met.
The High Speed (HS) Controller Area Network (CAN) chassis systems bus connections provide for the receipt of the following information from other systems:
- Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) control module - Vehicle speed signal
- Transmission Control Module (TCM) - REVERSE engaged signal
The Parking Assist Control Module (PAM) outputs messages on the HS CAN chassis systems bus. The Body Control Module/Gateway Module (BCM/GWM) processes these messages and converts them into HS CAN comfort messages, which are sent to the TS.
The PAM calculates the parking trajectory. The PAM communicates the output information to these vehicle systems:
- The Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) through HS CAN chassis systems bus. The trajectory calculations are processed by the PSCM ready for the first stage of the parking maneuver. Once a vehicle speed signal is received (vehicle reversing) the PSCM independently controls the steering trajectory.
- The TS displays the instructions to the driver.
- The front and rear parking aid sensor information is transmitted from the PAM to the TS. Audible warning tones are emitted through the audio system speakers.
