The supercharger increases the pressure of the air supplied to the engine, which increases the power output of the engine. This compression process produces heat that can reduce the performance gains due to reduced density of the intake air. In addition, it causes a temperature increase in the cylinder combustion. To counteract this, the charge air cooler is used to reduce the intake air temperature. This increases the density of the air allowing more air molecules to be delivered to the combustion chamber.
The charge air coolers are installed in the intake manifolds, and have connections to the supercharger cooling system. The charge air cooler uses engine coolant from the engine cooling system to cool the intake air before it enters the engine.
