Right Cylinder Head (G2796541): Removal

WARNING:
  • Make sure the engine cooling system is cool prior to doing this procedure.
  • Be prepared to collect escaping oil.
CAUTION:
  • Be prepared to collect escaping coolant.
  • Engine coolant will damage the paint finished surfaces. If split, immediately remove the coolant and clean the area with water.
NOTE:
  • This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending on the vehicle specification, but the essential information is always correct.
  • This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.
  1. Disconnect the 12 V system.

    Refer to: 12V SYSTEM DISCONNECT AND CONNECT

  2. Raise and support the vehicle on a suitable 2 post lift.

    Refer to: JACKING AND LIFTING

  3. Remove the right camshafts.

    Refer to: RIGHT CAMSHAFT 

  4. Remove the right exhaust manifold.

    Refer to: RIGHT EXHAUST MANIFOLD 

  5. Partially drain the engine cooling system.

    Refer to: COOLING SYSTEM PARTIAL DRAINING AND VACUUM FILLING

    • Release the clip.
    • Reposition the wiring harness away from the cylinder head.

    • Disconnect the 2 electrical connectors.
    • Release the 2 clips as illustrated.
    • Release the knock sensor wiring harness assembly and reposition away from the cylinder head.

    • Release the clip.
    • Remove the bolt.
    • Position the breather pipe away from the rear coolant manifold.
  9. WARNING: Be prepared to collect escaping fluids.

    • Release the coolant hose from the 2 clips.
    • Release the clamp.
    • Release the rear coolant manifold left hose.

    • Disconnect the electrical connector.
    • Release the 2 wiring harness clips.
    • Release the electrical connector clip.
  11. WARNING: Be prepared to collect escaping fluids.

    • Remove the 4 bolts.
    • Remove the rear coolant manifold.
  12. NOTE: This step is only required if new components are not installed.

    Remove and discard the 2 O-ring seals.

    • Using the special tool, rotate the oil filter cap 4 full revolutions counter clockwise.

      Special Tool(s): 303-752 

    • Allow the engine oil to drain from the oil filter element housing for 2 minutes.
    • Remove the oil filter cap.
    • Remove and discard the O-ring seal.

    Remove and discard the oil filter element.

    • Remove the 4 bolts.
    • Remove the oil filter housing.
    • Remove and discard the oil filter housing gasket.

    • Remove and discard the 2 M6 bolts.
    • Remove and discard the M8 bolt.
    • Use the special tool to remove and discard the 10 M11 bolts.

      Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1653  , 303-1492 

    • With the aid of another technician, remove the right cylinder head.

    Remove and discard the right cylinder head gasket.

  18. CAUTION:
    • If a new cylinder head has been installed then new tappets must be installed.
    • If the cylinder head is being removed without a new component being installed, the tappets must be installed in their original positions.
    NOTE: Note the installed position of the components before removal.

    Remove the 16 tappets.

    Use a suitable plastic scraper to clean the cylinder head mating surfaces.

  20. NOTE:
    • Do not disassemble further if the component is removed for access only.
    • Note the fitted position of the sensors prior to removal.

    • Remove the 2 bolts.
    • Remove the 2 knock sensors.
