Left Cylinder Head (G2796540): Removal

WARNING:
- Make sure the engine cooling system is cool prior to doing this procedure.
- Be prepared to collect escaping oil.
CAUTION:
- Be prepared to collect escaping coolant.
- Engine coolant will damage the paint finished surfaces. If split, immediately remove the coolant and clean the area with water.
NOTE:
- This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending on the vehicle specification, but the essential information is always correct.
- This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.
- Disconnect the 12 V system.
Refer to: 12V SYSTEM DISCONNECT AND CONNECT
- Raise and support the vehicle on a suitable 2 post lift.
Refer to: JACKING AND LIFTING
- Remove the left camshafts.
Refer to: LEFT CAMSHAFT
- Remove the left exhaust manifold.
Refer to: LEFT EXHAUST MANIFOLD
- Partially drain the engine cooling system.
Refer to: COOLING SYSTEM PARTIAL DRAINING AND VACUUM FILLING
- Release the clip.
- Reposition the wiring harness away from the cylinder head.
- Disconnect the 2 electrical connectors.
- Release the 2 clips as illustrated.
- Release the knock sensor wiring harness assembly and reposition away from the cylinder head.
- Release the clip.
- Remove the bolt.
- Position the breather pipe away from the rear coolant manifold.

WARNING: Be prepared to collect escaping fluids.
- Release the coolant hose from the 2 clips.
- Release the clamp.
- Release the rear coolant manifold left hose.
- Disconnect the electrical connector.
- Release the 2 wiring harness clips.
- Release the electrical connector clip.

WARNING: Be prepared to collect escaping fluids.
- Remove the 4 bolts.
- Remove the rear coolant manifold.

NOTE: This step is only required if new components are not installed.
Remove and discard the 2 O-ring seals.
- Remove and discard the 2 M6 bolts.
- Remove and discard the M8 bolt.
- Use the special tool to remove and discard the 10 M11 bolts.
Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1653 , 303-1492
- With the aid of another technician, remove the left cylinder head.
Remove and discard the left cylinder head gasket.

CAUTION:
- If a new cylinder head has been installed then new tappets must be installed.
- If the cylinder head is being removed without a new component being installed, the tappets must be installed in their original positions.
NOTE: Note the installed position of the components before removal.Remove the 16 tappets.
Use a suitable plastic scraper to clean the cylinder head mating surfaces.

NOTE:
- Do not disassemble further if the component is removed for access only.
- Note the fitted position of the sensors prior to removal.
- Remove the 2 bolts.
- Remove the 2 knock sensors.
