Battery Energy Control Module
The Battery Energy Control Module (BECM) is an integral part of the PHEV battery. The BECM controls the individual battery cell voltages, internal temperatures and the high voltage relays.
The BECM communicates with the HV system and other vehicle systems through the HS CAN power mode zero systems bus.
The PHEV battery has a BECM to control the internal temperature of the PHEV battery. The BECM has a number of temperature sensors positioned in the PHEV battery. The BECM uses the temperature sensors to control the internal temperature of the PHEV battery within a specified temperature range. The BECM controls:
- A PHEV battery coolant pump.
- A PHEV battery coolant heater.
- A PHEV battery coolant cooler connected to the A/C system, controlled by the HVAC Control Module (HVAC).
The cooling for the PHEV battery is from 2 sources. The BECM uses the appropriate cooling source depending on the internal temperature of the PHEV battery. The 2 sources are:
- The PHEV battery radiator
- The PHEV battery coolant cooler.

The BECM also monitors the HV interlock loop for any breaks.
