Turbocharger (G2341936): Operation: Notes

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.

The turbine wheel is installed in the turbine housing and the compressor is installed in the compressor housing. The turbine wheel and the compressor are enclosed separately and mounted on a common shaft. The exhaust gases from the exhaust manifold push the turbine wheel in the turbine housing. Then the compressor rotates in union in the compressor housing.

By turbocharging the intake air, the pressure and density of the intake air entering the cylinders is increased.

By turbocharging the intake air, the following benefits are enabled:

The turbocharger is interconnected by the charge air pipes of the intake air distribution and filtering system.

For additional information, refer to: INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION AND FILTERING

The charge air cooler cools the charge air from the turbocharger, which increases the density of the charge air. During a quick throttle closing event, the engine needs less charge air. The Compressor Recirculation Valve (CRV) allows the charge air to flow to the intake air pipe. Then the pressure inside the charge air cooler decreases. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) controls the CRV through Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) signal.

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) controls the operation of the turbocharger. When the engine is running at a high speed, the engine discharges more exhaust gases which rotate the turbine wheel at a high speed. The PCM controls the turbocharger wastegate actuator to open the Turbine Bypass Valve (TBV). The exhaust gases bypass the turbine wheel, which prevents the turbine wheel from high speed. The TBV is mechanically connected with the turbocharger wastegate actuator through a connecting rod.
