The cylinder head is cast from aluminum alloy and heat treated.
The cylinder head provides location for the following components:
- The 24 valves. (4 for each cylinder)
- The 6 fuel injectors.
- The 6 spark plugs.
- The cylinder head temperature sensor.
- The oil filter element.
A single layer water jacket cools the cylinder head.
There are 19 bolts to secure the cylinder head to the cylinder block. The cylinder head bolts are single use components and must be replaced if they are removed. Before replacement bolts are used, the holes must be dry and free from oil.
The cylinder head assembly contains the following components:
- The cylinder head
- The camshaft carrier
- The 2 Continuous Variable Valve Lift (CVVL) assemblies
- The engine vent oil separator
- The timing chain cover.
Each cylinder is served by 4 valves. To help achieve the required gas flow characteristics, these are arranged asymmetrically around the cylinder bore.
The valves are a conventional arrangement, with a valve and spring assembly retained by a valve collet. The hydraulic valve tappet on the exhaust valves make sure that there is no lash between the camshaft lobe and the roller finger cam follower.
The cylinder head gasket is of a multi-layer steel construction.
