Crankshaft Position Sensor
The CKP is an inductive sensor. The CKP allows the PCM to determine the angular position of the crankshaft and the engine speed.
The CKP is located in the rear left of the oil pan, in line with the engine drive plate. The CKP is installed with a single screw and sealed with an o-ring. A 3-pin electrical connector provides the interface with the engine wiring harness.
The head of the CKP faces a reluctor ring pressed into the outer circumference of the engine drive plate. The reluctor ring has 60 teeth, with 2 teeth missing. There are 58 teeth at 6° intervals, with 2 teeth removed to provide a reference point.
If the CKP fails, the PCM :
- Uses signals from the CMP s to determine the angular position of the crankshaft and the engine speed.
- Adopts a limp home mode where engine speed is limited to a maximum of 3, 000 Revolutions Per Minute (RPM).
If the CKP fails, engine starts require a long crank time. The PCM determines the angular position of the crankshaft using the CMP s.
