The CMP  s are Hall effect type sensors that allow the PCM  to determine the angular position of the camshafts. The CMP  s are of the ferro-magnetic resistance element type. The CMP  s produce a digital output which allows the PCM  to detect speeds down to 0.

The 4 CMP  s are located in the front upper timing covers, 1 for each camshaft.

Each CMP  is installed with a single screw and sealed with an o-ring. On each CMP  , a 3-pin electrical connector provides the interface with the engine wiring harness.

The head of each CMP  faces a reluctor ring attached to the front of the related VCT  actuator.

This can result in reduced engine performance and slow to start. A failed CMP  does not prevent the engine starting.
