Crankshaft Position Sensor
The CKP is located at the rear left side of the engine. The CKP is located in a hole and is secured with a screw.
The CKP has a 3-pin connector.
The 3-pin connector provides the following connections:
- A 5V reference voltage from the PCM .
- A CKP signal to the PCM .
- A ground connection.
The CKP is positioned adjacent to the reluctor ring, which is an integral part of the drive plate. The reluctor ring has 58 teeth and a section where 2 teeth are missing. The CKP is a Hall effect sensor which uses the missing teeth on the reluctor ring to determine the crankshaft position and rotational speed.
If a fault occurs with the CKP , a DTC is registered in the PCM . The engine continues to operate using data from the CMP until the fault has been corrected.
The PCM uses the signal from the CKP for the following functions:
- Synchronization
- Determine fuel injection timing
- Produce an engine speed signal which is broadcast on the FlexRay systems bus for use by other systems.
