Pinpoint Test B: Pcm Diagnostic Trouble Code Repair Actions P023A Open Load

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. B1: PCM DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE REPAIR ACTIONS P023A OPEN LOAD 1
    1. Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment, check for DTC  P023A set in the PCM

      Is the coolant pump running?

Yes:  Check PWM  circuit continuity (coolant pump to PCM  ) and resistance. GO to  B2.

No:  Check potential difference across the coolant pump. GO to  B4.

  2. B2: PCM DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE REPAIR ACTIONS P023A OPEN LOAD 2
    1. Check the PWM  circuit continuity (coolant pump to PCM  ) and resistance.

Is there continuity and no resistance?

Yes:  If there is continuity and no resistance. GO to  B3.

No:  Wiring harness continuity issue. Check the harness for open circuit or short circuit, check the connector for backed out or corroded pins and repair as necessary. Clear the DTC  s and retest. If the fault persists, restart the diagnostics according to the latest DTC  s set

  3. B3: PCM DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE REPAIR ACTIONS P023A OPEN LOAD 3
    1. Reconnect the harness, clear the DTC  s and retest

Is the coolant pump now working?

Yes:  Repair complete. Raise an Electronic Product Quality Report (EPQR) for the harness part number and a loose connection

No:  Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment to control the coolant pump duty demand, manually set the coolant pump demand to 10% (tolerance +/- 2%) duty. If the pump stops (pump rotational speed = 0 Revolutions Per Minute (RPM)), the pump is working. If the pump does not receive a signal from the PCM  and continues to run at a reduced speed, (at pump demand duty 0%, the pump enters fail-safe and runs at 70% duty = 4300 RPM  ) using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment, update the PCM  to the latest level software, clear the DTC  and retest. If the fault persists, raise a Technical Assistance (TA) regarding a possible powertrain control module fault

  4. B4: PCM DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE REPAIR ACTIONS P023A OPEN LOAD 4
    1. Measure the potential difference across the coolant pump. Disconnect the connector from the pump, connect the multimeter +ve terminal to the power terminal in the harness connector and multimeter -ve terminal to the earth terminal in the harness connector

Is the potential difference across the coolant pump between 8v and 17v?

Yes:  If the potential difference is between 8v and 17v GO to  B5.

No:  If the potential difference is not between 8v and 17v, check the battery and fuse. Check the continuity of the power and earth lines including the earth stud. If the voltage is above 8v the earth wiring or stud may be faulty. If the voltage is below 8v the power wiring may be faulty, or the vehicle battery may have low voltage. Repair as necessary. If the fault persists, restart the diagnostics according to the latest DTC  s set.

  5. B5: PCM DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE REPAIR ACTIONS P023A OPEN LOAD 5
    1. Reconnect the connector and check if the coolant pump is running

Is the coolant pump now running?

Yes:  If the coolant pump is running, clear the DTC  s and retest. If the fault persists, restart the diagnostics according to the latest DTC  s set

No:  If the coolant pump is not running, install a new coolant pump, clear the DTC  s and retest.
