Timing Chains, Guides, And TENSIONERS (G2855782): Installation
- CAUTION: Install a new friction washers.
- Install a new inner friction washer.
Renew Part: Crankshaft pulley friction washer Quantity: 1 .
- Install the crankshaft sprocket.
- Install a new outer friction washer.
Renew Part: Crankshaft pulley friction washer Quantity: 1 .
- Install a new inner friction washer.
- Install a new left side timing chain guide.
Renew Part: Left side timing chain guide Quantity: 1 .
- Install a new right side timing chain guide.
Renew Part: Right side timing chain guide Quantity: 1 .
- Install and tighten 6 new timing chain guide bolts.
Renew Part: Timing chain guide bolt Quantity: 6 .
Torque : 12 Nm
- Install a new left side timing chain guide.
- Install the special tool JLR-303-1452 to each camshaft.
Special Tool(s): 303-1452
- Install and tighten the 6 bolts.
Torque : 10 Nm
- Install the special tool JLR-303-1452 to each camshaft.

CAUTION: Do not overturn the camshafts.
Carefully rotate the camshafts if the position is not as shown.
Install the special tool JLR-303-1445 as illustrated.
Special Tool(s): 303-1445

CAUTION:
- Do not overturn the camshafts.
- Tighten the wing nuts finger tight. Failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the components.
multimedia:A supplement to the article is available.Using a suitable tool, carefully rock the camshaft clockwise then counter-clockwise. Turn the special tool locking nuts until there is no movement left in camshafts. Repeat this step for both camshafts.

- Remove the 6 bolts.
- Remove the special tool JLR-303-1452 from each camshaft.
Special Tool(s): 303-1452

CAUTION: If the VCT unit is knocked or dropped then new VCT unit must be installed.
- Reposition the oil drain tube.
- Install the timing chain with the 2 VCT units.
- NOTE: Install the bolts finger tight at this stage.
Install the 6 new VCT unit bolts, but do not fully tighten at this stage.
Renew Part: Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) bolt(s) Quantity: 6 .

CAUTION: Make sure the highlighted links on the timing chain are in line with the timing marks as illustrated.
Inspect the highlighted signs on the timing chain.
Install and tighten the oil drain tube lower bolt.
Torque : 10 Nm

CAUTION:
- If the vehicle is installed with components shown in section 1 of the illustration, these must be replaced with components shown in section (2).
- Do not attempt to install the components shown in section 1 of the illustration, as damage to the engine may occur.
- Using the illustration, identify which timing chain tensioner and guide is currently installed to the vehicle.
- Make sure the vehicle is assembled using components shown in section (2) of the illustration only.
- Install a new timing chain tensioner guide.
Renew Part: Timing chain tensioner guide Quantity: 1 .
- Install and tighten the new bolt.
Renew Part: Timing chain tensioner guide bolt Quantity: 1 .
Torque : 25 Nm
- Install a new timing chain tensioner guide.

CAUTION:
- If the vehicle is installed with components shown in section 1 of the illustration, these must be replaced with components shown in section (2).
- Do not attempt to install the components shown in section 1 of the illustration, as damage to the engine may occur.

- If a new timing chain tensioner is installed, do not deploy the tensioner pin and proceed to the next step.
- If the tensioner to be installed has previously been deployed, make sure the attached animation is followed to make sure the tensioner is set correctly, failure to do this may result in damage to the engine.
- CAUTION: Do not release the timing chain tensioner locking pin at this stage.
- Install a new timing chain tensioner.
Renew Part: Timing chain tensioner Quantity: 1 .
- Install and tighten the 2 new bolts.
Renew Part: Timing chain tensioner bolt Quantity: 2 .
Torque : 12 Nm
- Install a new timing chain tensioner.
Apply and maintain tension on the component.
Remove the timing chain tensioner retaining pin and release the timing chain guide.
The piston should apply tension to the timing chain guide.
The timing chain tensioner must maintain tension on the chain guide. If the piston can be pushed back so the chain guide contacts with the body of the tensioner, the tensioner is not correct. Repeat installation steps 14-19.
- Install the special tool JLR-303-1452 to each camshaft.
Special Tool(s): 303-1452
- Install and tighten the 6 bolts.
Torque : 10 Nm
- Install the special tool JLR-303-1452 to each camshaft.

- Install a new timing chain tensioner.

Remove the timing chain tensioner retaining pin and release the timing chain guide.

CAUTION: Make sure that the torque wrench is aligned with the special tool as illustrated in the graphic.
- Install the special tool JLR-303-1482 as illustrated.
Special Tool(s): 303-1482
- Install a torque wrench to the special tool.
General Equipment: Torque wrench
- Apply torque to the end of the special tool assembly.
Torque : 35 Nm
- Install the special tool JLR-303-1482 as illustrated.

CAUTION: Make sure that the torque wrench does not move when tightening the VCT unit bolts.NOTE: Make sure to tighten the exhaust VCT unit bolts first.
Tighten the 6 VCT unit bolts.
Torque : 32 Nm
Install and tighten the oil drain tube upper bolt.
Torque : 10 Nm
Remove the special tool JLR-303-1445.
Special Tool(s): 303-1445

CAUTION:
- Make sure that the torque wrench is aligned with the special tool as illustrated in the graphic.
- Make sure that the torque wrench does not move when tightening the VCT unit bolts.
NOTE: Make sure to tighten the exhaust VCT unit bolts first.- Install the special tool JLR-303-1482 as illustrated.
Special Tool(s): 303-1482
- Install a torque wrench to the special tool.
General Equipment: Torque wrench
- Apply torque to the end of the special tool assembly.
Torque : 35 Nm
- Tighten the 6 VCT
unit bolts.
Torque : 32 Nm
Remove the special tool JLR-303-1445.
Special Tool(s): 303-1445
- Remove the bolt.
- Remove the special tool JLR-303-1303.
Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1303

CAUTION:
- An M16 washer must be used to prevent damage to the crankshaft on installation.
- The thread is left handed.
- Install the M16 washer.
- Install and tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt.
Torque : 20 Nm
- Remove the 2 bolts.
- Remove the special tool JLR-303-1304.
Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1304
- Rotate the engine two complete turns clockwise.

CAUTION: Only rotate the crankshaft clockwise.
- Install the special tool JLR-303-1303 as illustrated.
Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1303
- Install and tighten the bolt.
Torque : 10 Nm
- Install the special tool JLR-303-1303 as illustrated.

CAUTION: If the special tool cannot be installed, the timing chain installation steps must be repeated.
- Install the special tools. If the special tools cannot be installed, remove both timing chains and components and repeat the process from step 3 of the installation until the special tools JLR-303-1445 are installed correctly.

- Remove the special tools.
- Install the special tools. If the special tools cannot be installed, remove both timing chains and components and repeat the process from step 3 of the installation until the special tools JLR-303-1445 are installed correctly.
- Remove the bolt.
- Remove the special tool JLR-303-1303.
Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1303
- Install the CKP .
- Install and tighten the bolt.
Torque : 10 Nm
- Connect the electrical connector.
- Install the special tool JLR-303-1304 as illustrated.
Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1304
- Install and tighten the 2 bolts.
Torque : 20 Nm
- Install the special tool JLR-303-1304 as illustrated.

CAUTION: The thread is left handed.
- Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt.
- Remove the M16 washer.
- Remove the 2 bolts.
- Remove the special tool JLR-303-1304.
Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1304
- Install the timing cover.

- Connect the 12 V system.
