Active Exhaust System
| ITEM | DESCRIPTION |
|---|---|
| A | Active exhaust disabled |
| B | Active exhaust enabled |
The active exhaust system allow the exhaust gases to bypass the rear silencer to produce a more sporty exhaust sound during performance driving.
The position of the exhaust valves are set by the PCM .
The position of the exhaust valves is dependent on:
- Engine speed
- Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) sensor position signal
- The selected mode on the Interactive Display Module 'A' (IDMA).
When the engine is running the driver can activate the active exhaust system. It can be operated by touching the active exhaust soft key on the IDMA . When the vehicles shuts down, the active exhaust vanes are closed by default.
When the active exhaust system is activated manually by touching the soft key, the IDMA notifies the Body Control Module (BCM)/Gateway Module A (GWM). The BCM /GWM transmits the signal to PCM through the FlexRay systems bus. The PCM sends a control signal to operate the active exhaust actuators through hardwired connection.
The active exhaust system has 2 different modes:
- Normal Mode
- Dynamic Mode
Normal Mode
In normal mode, the valves are open at idle. They close around 2, 000 Revolutions Per Minute (RPM) depending upon the APP sensor position signal. The valves gradually open when greater than 2, 500 RPM and are fully open when greater than 4, 250 RPM . This serves to both enhance the sound quality in the vehicle and reduce back pressure to enhance engine performance.
Dynamic Mode
In dynamic mode, the valves are open at idle. The valves begin to open at around 2, 500 RPM and are fully open when greater than 3, 500 RPM .
On vehicle start up, different modes are available:
- Pressing and holding the Engine start button - The active exhaust vanes stay in closed position for a quiet start.
- Normal press and release on the Engine start button - The active exhaust vanes open to enhance the exhaust sound.
