ITEM DESCRIPTION
1 Pinion gear
2 Starter motor
3 Starter motor electrical connection
4 Starter motor solenoid electrical connection
5 Starter motor solenoid

The starter motor is attached to the cylinder block, at the joint between the transmission and the engine. The pinion gear of the starter motor protrudes through an aperture in the transmission housing, adjacent to the ring gear on the drive plate.

The starter motor has the motor located directly behind the pinion gear. The motor is geared directly to the pinion gear and is a pre-engaged type comprising a series wound motor and an overrunning clutch.

The starter motor has a permanent power supply through a fuse, located in the Battery Junction Box (BJB). The starter solenoid is connected to a power supply from the starter relay in the Engine Junction Box (EJB). The starter relay is controlled by the PCM  .

When the starter motor solenoid coils are energized, it instantly pulls-in the solenoid plunger and pivots the actuating arm, which in turn moves the pinion gear into its meshing position with the engine flywheel teeth. When the solenoid plunger reaches the plunger plate it makes a high current connection providing current from the 12V startup battery to the starter motor windings.
