Timing Drive Components (G2244093): Removal

CAUTION: Check all timing components for wear and install new components if required.
NOTE:
  • This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending on the vehicle specification, but the essential information is always correct.
  • This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.
  1. Disconnect the startup battery ground cable.

    Refer to: STARTUP BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECT .

  2. Raise and support the vehicle on a suitable 2 post lift.

    Refer to: LIFTING .

  3. Remove the starter motor.

    Refer to: STARTER MOTOR .

  4. Remove the timing cover.

    Refer to: TIMING COVER .

  5. CAUTION: The M16 washer must be installed to prevent damage to the crankshaft on installation.

    Install and tighten the previously removed crankshaft pulley bolt.

    Torque  : 20 Nm

    • Disconnect the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.
    • Remove the bolt.
    • Remove the CKP sensor.
  7. CAUTION: Only rotate the crankshaft clockwise.

    Install the special tool and tighten the special tool bolt.

    Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1303 

    Torque  : 8 Nm

    Install the special tool and tighten the 2 special tool bolts.

    Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1304 

    Torque  : 10 Nm

    Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt.

    • Remove the 2 bolts.
    • Remove the timing chain tensioner.

    • Remove the bolt.
    • Remove the timing chain guide.

    Remove the 6 variable valve timing unit bolts.

  13. CAUTION: If the variable valve timing units are knocked or dropped then new components must be installed.

    • Remove the timing chain.
    • Remove the 2 variable valve timing units.

    • Remove the 2 bolts.
    • Remove the timing chain tensioner.

    • Remove the bolt.
    • Remove the timing chain guide.

    • Remove the bolt.
    • Reposition the oil drain pipe away from the timing chain.

    Remove the 6 variable valve timing unit bolts.

  18. CAUTION: If the variable valve timing units are knocked or dropped then new components must be installed.

    • Remove the timing chain.
    • Remove the 2 variable valve timing units.

    • Remove the 6 bolts.
    • Remove the 2 timing chain fixed guides.

    • Remove the sprocket.
    • Remove and discard the 2 friction washers.
