Catalytic Converter

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

The catalytic converter reduces the carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons content of the exhaust gases. In the catalytic converter the exhaust gases are passed through honeycombed ceramic elements coated with a special surface treatment called a 'washcoat'.

The washcoat increases the surface area of the ceramic elements by a factor of approximately 7, 000. On top of the washcoat is a coating containing palladium and rhodium, which is the active constituent for converting harmful emissions into inert by-products. These add oxygen to the carbon monoxide and the hydrocarbons in the exhaust gases, to convert them into carbon dioxide and water respectively.

A mid catalyst HO2S  is located on each catalytic converter and a post catalyst HO2S  on each of the outlet pipes.

Each HO2S  is used to monitor the exhaust gases leaving the engine. The PCM  uses this information to provide accurately metered quantities of fuel to the combustion chambers. This makes sure that the engine uses fuel efficiently and minimizes exhaust emissions.
