Electronic Engine Controls Powertrain Control Module (Pcm) Sensor Inputs

The PCM  has the capability of modifying the fuel and ignition control outputs in response to several sensor inputs. An incorrect input or missing signal can cause a misfire, excessive emissions and drive ability issues. Refer to the table below for the PCM  input sensors and associated issues

SENSOR SYMPTOM ACTIONS
Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) sensor
  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Engine will not start or is difficult to start
  • Engine intermittently stalls or has uneven idle
  • Engine reduced performance, vehicle in limp home mode
  • Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment, check the powertrain control module for crankshaft position sensor related DTC  s and refer to the relevant DTC  index
  • Refer to the electrical circuit diagrams and check the crank shaft position sensor power and signal circuits for short circuit to ground, short circuit to power, open circuit, high resistance
  • Check connector for poor connection, corrosion and backed out pins
  • Install new components only when diagnosed as failed
Exhaust CMP  sensor (2 off)
  • MIL  illuminated
  • Engine intermittently stalls or has uneven idle
  • Engine reduced performance, limp home mode
NOTE: If one exhaust camshaft position sensor fails, the variable camshaft timing actuator will be disabled for both exhaust camshafts
  • Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment, check the powertrain control module for exhaust camshaft position sensor related DTC  s and refer to the relevant DTC  index
  • Refer to the electrical circuit diagrams and check the power and signal circuits of each exhaust camshaft position sensor for short circuit to ground, short circuit to power, open circuit, high resistance
  • Check connector(s) for poor connection, corrosion and backed out pins
  • Install new components only when diagnosed as failed
Inlet CMP  sensor (2 off)
  • MIL  illuminated
  • Engine intermittently stalls or has uneven idle
  • Engine reduced performance, limp home mode
NOTE: If one inlet camshaft position sensor fails, the variable camshaft timing actuator will be disabled for both inlet camshafts
  • Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment, check the powertrain control module for exhaust camshaft position sensor related DTC  s and refer to the relevant DTC  index
  • Refer to the electrical circuit diagrams and check the power and signal circuits of each exhaust camshaft position sensor for short circuit to ground, short circuit to power, open circuit, high resistance
  • Check connector(s) for poor connection, corrosion and backed out pins
  • Install new components only when diagnosed as failed
Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor (2 off)
  • MIL  illuminated
  • Excessive fuel consumption
  • Excessive emissions
  • Engine Overheating
  • Cooling fans not operating
  • Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment, check the powertrain control module for engine coolant temperature sensor related DTC  s and refer to the relevant DTC  index
  • Refer to the electrical circuit diagrams and check the engine coolant temperature sensor power and signal circuits for short circuit to ground, short circuit to power, open circuit, high resistance
  • Check connector for poor connection, corrosion and backed out pins
  • Install new components only when diagnosed as failed
  • For further engine cooling diagnostics, REFER to: ENGINE COOLING
Knock sensor (4 off)
  • MIL  illuminated
  • Engine judder under acceleration
  • Engine knocking noise (detonation) under acceleration
  • Engine power reduced
  • Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment, check the powertrain control module for knock sensor related DTC  s and refer to the relevant DTC  index
  • Refer to the electrical circuit diagrams and check the knock sensor circuits for short circuit to ground, short circuit to power, open circuit, high resistance
  • Check connector for poor connection, corrosion and backed out pins
  • Install new components only when diagnosed as failed
Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor
  • MIL  illuminated
  • Excessive fuel consumption
  • Excessive emissions
  • Engine power reduced
  • Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment, check the powertrain control module for manifold absolute pressure sensor related DTC  s and refer to the relevant DTC  index
  • Refer to the electrical circuit diagrams and check the manifold absolute pressure sensor power and signal circuits for short circuit to ground, short circuit to power, open circuit, high resistance
  • Check connector for poor connection, corrosion and backed out pins
  • Install new components only when diagnosed as failed
Manifold Absolute Pressure and Temperature sensor (MAPT) sensor
  • MIL  illuminated
  • Excessive fuel consumption
  • Excessive emissions
  • Engine power reduced
  • Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment, check the powertrain control module for manifold absolute pressure and temperature sensor related DTC  s and refer to the relevant DTC  index
  • Refer to the electrical circuit diagrams and check the manifold absolute pressure and temperature sensor power and signal circuits for short circuit to ground, short circuit to power, open circuit, high resistance
  • Check connector for poor connection, corrosion and backed out pins
  • Install new components only when diagnosed as failed
Mass Air Flow and Temperature (MAFT) sensor (2 off)
  • MIL  illuminated
  • Excessive fuel consumption
  • Excessive emissions
  • Engine power reduced
  • Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment, check the powertrain control module for mass air flow and temperature sensor related DTC  s and refer to the relevant DTC  index
  • Refer to the electrical circuit diagrams and check the mass air flow and temperature sensor power and signal circuits for short circuit to ground, short circuit to power, open circuit, high resistance
  • Install new components only when diagnosed as failed
  • Install a new sensor only when diagnosed as failed
Charge air temperature sensor
  • MIL  illuminated
  • Poor acceleration
  • Excessive fuel consumption
  • Excessive emissions
  • Engine power reduced
  • Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment, check the powertrain control module for charge air temperature sensor related DTC  s and refer to the relevant DTC  index
  • Refer to the electrical circuit diagrams and check the charge air temperature sensor power and signal circuits for short circuit to ground, short circuit to power, open circuit, high resistance
  • Check connector for poor connection, corrosion and backed out pins
  • Install new components only when diagnosed as failed
Electric throttle - Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)
  • MIL  illuminated
  • inconsistent throttle response
  • Engine has uneven idle
  • Excessive fuel consumption
  • Engine power reduced
  • Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment, check the powertrain control module for throttle position sensor related DTC  s and refer to the relevant DTC  index
  • Refer to the electrical circuit diagrams and check the electric throttle position sensor power and signal circuits for short circuit to ground, short circuit to power, open circuit, high resistance
  • Check connector for poor connection, corrosion and backed out pins
  • Install new components only when diagnosed as failed
Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) (6 off)
  • MIL  illuminated
  • Excessive fuel consumption
  • Excessive emissions
  • Engine power reduced
  • Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment, check the powertrain control module for heated oxygen sensor related DTC  s and refer to the relevant DTC  index
  • Install new components only when diagnosed as failed
  • For further Heated Oxygen Sensor diagnostics, Refer to the appropriate Electronic Engine Controls service information.
Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) Sensor
  • MIL  illuminated
  • inconsistent throttle response
  • Engine has uneven idle
  • Excessive fuel consumption
  • Engine power reduced
  • Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment, check the powertrain control module for accelerator pedal position sensor related DTC  s and refer to the relevant DTC  index
  • Refer to the electrical circuit diagrams and check the accelerator pedal position sensor power and signal circuits for short circuit to ground, short circuit to power, open circuit, high resistance
  • Check connector for poor connection, corrosion and backed out pins
  • Install new components only when diagnosed as failed
Ambient Air Temperature Sensor
  • MIL  illuminated
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment, check the powertrain control module for ambient air temperature sensor related DTC  s and refer to the relevant DTC  index
  • Refer to the electrical circuit diagrams and check the ambient air temperature sensor power and signal circuits for short circuit to ground, short circuit to power, open circuit, high resistance
  • Check connector for poor connection, corrosion and backed out pins
  • Install new components only when diagnosed as failed
Fuel Rail Pressure and Temperature (FRPT) sensor
  • MIL  illuminated
  • Engine will not start or is difficult to start
  • Engine power reduced
  • Engine intermittently stalls or has uneven idle
  • Excessive fuel consumption
  • Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment, check the powertrain control module for fuel rail pressure and temperature sensor related DTC  s and refer to the relevant DTC  index
  • Refer to the electrical circuit diagrams and check the fuel rail pressure and temperature sensor power and signal circuits for short circuit to ground, short circuit to power, open circuit, high resistance
  • Check connector for poor connection, corrosion and backed out pins
  • Install new components only when diagnosed as failed
  • For further fuel rail pressure and temperature sensor diagnostics, REFER to: FUEL CHARGING AND CONTROLS
Oil level and temperature sensor
  • Low oil level indicator lamp illuminated or intermittently illuminated
NOTE: The temperature function of the oil level and temperature sensor is not operational on the V8 5.0L S/C Petrol engine.
  • Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment, check the powertrain control module for engine oil level sensor related DTC  s and refer to the relevant DTC  index
  • Refer to the electrical circuit diagrams and check the engine oil level sensor power and signal circuits for short circuit to ground, short circuit to power, open circuit, high resistance
  • Check connector for poor connection, corrosion and backed out pins
  • Install new components only when diagnosed as failed
Low Pressure (LP) fuel sensor
  • MIL  illuminated
  • Engine power reduced
  • Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment, check the powertrain control module for low pressure fuel sensor related DTC  s and refer to the relevant DTC  index
  • Refer to the electrical circuit diagrams and check the low pressure fuel sensor power and signal circuits for short circuit to ground, short circuit to power, open circuit, high resistance
  • Check connector for poor connection, corrosion and backed out pins
  • Install new components only when diagnosed as failed
