Charge Air Temperature Sensor
The charge air temperature sensor is located in the supercharger top cover. A 2-pin electrical connector provides the interface between the sensor and the engine wiring harness. The sensor contains a Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) resistor with supply and return connections to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
The PCM supplies the charge air temperature sensor with a 5V reference voltage. The PCM calculates the charge air temperature from a map of sensor voltage against temperature. The PCM uses the input:
- To monitor operation of the charge air coolant pump.
- For air mass calculations used in control of the supercharger bypass valve.
The PCM uses the inputs as part of the charge air strategy. The strategy coordinates operation of the electric throttle and the bypass valve and predicts the air mass delivered to the cylinders.
If the charge air temperature sensor fails, the PCM substitutes the input with a modelled temperature. The driver may not notice any change if the sensor fails.
