Cooling System Draining And Vacuum Filling (G2523581): Filling
-
CAUTION: Failure to properly degas the cooling system may cause overheating and failure of the engine.
Prepare a container with sufficient amount of coolant to the specified concentration.
Refer to: SPECIFICATIONS
Install the special tool HU-919 and JLR-303-1634 to the coolant expansion tank.
Special Tool(s): HU-919 , JLR-303-1634
- Close the coolant inlet and air supply valves on the special tool HU-919.
- Connect the hose from the vacuum refill adapter into a container of clean coolant, making sure the hose is submerged in coolant at all times during the fill operation.
- Connect a regulated compressed air supply pipe to the special tool HU-919.
-
NOTE:
- Make sure the coolant supply valve is in the closed position on the vacuum filler gauge assembly.
- The coolant vacuum fill tool needs an air pressure of 6 to 8 bar (87 to 116 psi) to operate correctly.
- Small diameter or long airlines may restrict airflow to the HU-919 vacuum refill tool.
- Make sure the coolant volume in the container is greater than the amount of coolant the vehicle requires.
Open the air supply valve until -0.8 Bar is shown on the gauge.
- If -0.8 Bar is displayed on the vacuum refill tool HU-919 gauge, close the air supply valve.
- Wait 1 minute to inspect if the cooling system holds the vacuum.
Open the coolant supply valve and allow the coolant to be drawn into the system.
Close the coolant supply valve until when the coolant expansion tank is at least half full and no further fluid is entering the tank. If the fill process appears to stop and the coolant expansion tank is not yet half full then stop the fill process, remove the tool and restart the cooling system draining and vacuum filling procedure.
-
WARNING: Make sure that the coolant supply valve and the air supply valve are closed on the special tool HU-919.
- Release the coolant inlet hose from the special tool HU-919.
- Disconnect the air supply pipe from the special tool HU-919.
- Remove the special tools HU-919 and JLR-303-1634 from the engine coolant expansion tank.
- Inspect and top up the engine coolant expansion tank to the max level mark.
Refer to: SPECIFICATIONS
- Remove the engine cover.
Refer to: ENGINE COVER - INGENIUM I6 3.0L PETROL
- Use the correct adapter to connect the hand air pump kit to the engine coolant expansion tank.
- Slowly pressurize the cooling system pressure until 1 bar (15 psi) is showed in the gauge.
- Inspect that the cooling system holds pressure.
-
NOTE:
- Make sure the hood is open.
- Make sure the engine is not running.
- Switch the Ignition ON and select the park position (car in Parking (P) or Neutral (N) mode).
- Open the driver's door.
- Fully press the accelerator pedal for 10 seconds.
- Fully release the accelerator pedal.
- Electric coolant pump will be activated for 5 minutes.
- Monitoring the engine coolant level in the engine coolant expansion tank.
- After 5 minutes, increase the system pressure until 1 bar is showed in the gauge, if needed.
-
CAUTION: Be prepared to collect escaping coolant.
- Release the auxiliary radiator bleed screw.
- If coolant is visible from the bleeding point outlet, tighten the bleed screw.
Torque : 2 Nm
-
CAUTION: Be prepared to collect escaping coolant.
- Increase the system pressure until 1 bar is showed in the gauge.
- Release the charge air cooler bleed screws (1).
- If coolant is visible from the bleeding point outlet, tighten the bleed screws (1).
Torque : 2 Nm
- Repeat this process at the bleed screw (2).
-
CAUTION: Be prepared to collect escaping coolant.
- Increase the system pressure until 1 bar is showed in the gauge.
- Release the auxiliary coolant pump bleed screw.
- If coolant is visible from the bleeding point outlet, tighten the bleed screw.
Torque : 2 Nm
- Switch the Ignition OFF.
-
- Disconnect the hand pump from the engine coolant expansion tank.
- Fill the coolant expansion tank to the Max level mark.
Refer to: SPECIFICATIONS
- Install the engine coolant expansion tank cap.
- Install the engine cover.

WARNING: Never start the engine or leave it running, when the vehicle is in an enclosed space without adequate ventilation. Exhaust gases are poisonous and inhalation can cause unconsciousness and potentially lead to serious injury or death.
Install the exhaust gas extraction hose to the exhaust pipe of the vehicle.
-
CAUTION: Regularly inspect the engine temperature warning lamp and the instrument panel. If the warning lamp is displayed, switch the engine off immediately and allow to cool. Failure to follow this instruction may cause damage to the vehicle.
- Start and run the engine and allow to idle for 30 seconds.
- Select Dynamic or Sand Driving mode.
- Make sure the interior heater is switched off.
- Hold the engine speed between 2500 rpm and 3500 rpm until the cooling fan start to run and the thermostat opens. This will be evident as the radiator side coolant temperature will rise as coolant starts to flow around the radiator.
- Switch the engine off and allow to cool.
- Clean any spilled coolant fluid from the vehicle.
- Remove the exhaust gas extraction hose from the exhaust pipe of the vehicle.
-
WARNING: Since injury such as scalding could be caused by escaping steam or coolant fluid, allow the vehicle cooling system to cool prior to carrying out this procedure.
Inspect and top up the coolant fluid if required.
