Cooling System Draining And Vacuum Filling (G2523581): Draining

WARNING: Injury such as scalding could be caused by escaping steam or coolant. Make sure the vehicle cooling system is cool prior to carrying out this procedure.
CAUTION:
  • The engine cooling system must be maintained with the correct concentration and type of antifreeze solution to prevent corrosion and frost damage. Failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the vehicle.
  • Never remove the coolant expansion tank cap under any circumstances while the engine is operating. Failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the engine.
  • Engine coolant will damage the paint finished surfaces. If spilled, immediately remove the coolant and clean the area with water.
NOTE:
  • This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending on the vehicle specification, but the essential information is always correct.
  • This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.
  1. WARNING: Since injury such as scalding could be caused by escaping steam or coolant, do not remove the filler cap from the coolant expansion tank while the system is hot.

    Remove the coolant expansion tank cap.

  2. Raise and support the vehicle on a suitable 2-post lift.

    Refer to: JACKING AND LIFTING

  3. Remove the engine undershield.

    Refer to: ENGINE UNDERSHIELD

    • Remove the 4 fasteners.
    • Release the 8 clips.
    • Remove the radiator splash shield as illustrated.
  5. CAUTION: Be prepared to collect escaping coolant.

    • Release the radiator drain plug.
    • Allow the coolant to drain into a suitable container.
    • Tighten the radiator drain plug.

      Torque  : 2 Nm 

  6. Remove the front left wheel arch liner.

    Refer to: FRONT WHEEL ARCH LINER

    • Release the charge air radiator drain plug.
    • Allow the coolant to drain into a suitable container.
    • Tighten the charge air radiator drain plug.

      Torque  : 2 Nm 

  8. CAUTION: Be prepared to collect escaping coolant.

    • Release the wiring harness clip.
    • Disconnect the lower coolant hose connector from the left auxiliary radiator.
    • Allow the coolant to drain into a suitable container.
    • Connect the lower coolant hose connector to the left auxiliary radiator.
    • Install the wiring harness clip.
  9. CAUTION: Be prepared to collect escaping coolant.

    • Remove the engine coolant drain plug.
    • Remove and discard the engine coolant drain plug washer.
    • Allow the coolant to drain into a suitable container.
    • Install the new engine coolant drain plug washer.

      Renew Part: Cylinder block coolant drain plug washer Quantity: 1 . 

    • Install and tighten the engine coolant drain plug.

      Torque  : 45 Nm 

  10. CAUTION: Be prepared to collect escaping coolant.

    • Disconnect the 2 coolant hose connectors from the transmission cooler.
    • Allow the coolant to drain into a suitable container.
    • Connect the 2 coolant hose connectors to the transmission cooler.
  11. CAUTION: Be prepared to collect escaping coolant.

    • Disconnect the coolant hose connector from the auxiliary coolant pump.
    • Allow the coolant to drain into a suitable container.
    • Connect the coolant hose connector to the auxiliary coolant pump.
  12. NOTE: The next 3 steps only vehicles with Fuel Fired Booster Heater (FFBH).

    Remove the front right wheel arch liner.

    Refer to: FRONT WHEEL ARCH LINER

    • Disconnect the coolant hose connector from the FFBH  .
    • Release the coolant hose clamp and release the coolant hose from the FFBH  .
    • Allow the engine coolant to drain into a suitable container.
    • Install the coolant hose to the FFBH  and install the coolant hose clamp.
    • Connect the coolant hose connector to the FFBH  .
  14. Install the front right wheel arch liner.

    Refer to: FRONT WHEEL ARCH LINER

  15. NOTE: The next 3 steps only vehicles with twin auxiliary radiators.

    Remove the front right wheel arch liner.

    • Disconnect the coolant hose connector from the right auxiliary radiator.
    • Allow the engine coolant to drain into a suitable container.
    • Connect the coolant hose connector to the right auxiliary radiator.
  17. Install the front right wheel arch liner.

    Refer to: FRONT WHEEL ARCH LINER

  18. Install the front left wheel arch liner.

    Refer to: FRONT WHEEL ARCH LINER

  19. Install the engine undershield.

    Refer to: ENGINE UNDERSHIELD

    • Install the radiator splash shield.
    • Install the 8 clips.
    • Install the 4 fasteners.
