There are 4 suspension height sensors used in the Adaptive Damping (AD) system, 2 for the front suspension and 2 for the rear suspension. The front suspension height sensors attach to each side of the front subframe with a bracket. The height sensor connects to the related front control arm with a lever arm and a drop link.
The rear suspension height sensors attach to each side of the rear subframe with a bracket. The height sensor connects to the related rear lower control with a lever arm and a drop link.
On each height sensor, the lever arm and the drop link convert linear movement of the suspension into rotary movement of the sensor shaft. The suspension height sensors measure suspension movement at each corner of the vehicle and output a corresponding analogue signal to the Chassis Control Module (CHCM). The algorithms in the CHCM calculate the position, velocity and frequency content of the signals and use the results for suspension control.
Each suspension height sensor is connected to the CHCM via 3 wires, which provide 5V power supply, ground and signal return connections.
The sensing element consists of Hall effect devices. The Hall effect devices arranged to measure the direction of the magnetic field of a small magnet attached to the end of the sensor shaft. As the sensor shaft rotates, so do the lines of magnetic flux from the magnet. The signals from the Hall effect devices are processed by means of a dedicated integrated circuit to generate an output voltage. The output voltage varies as the sensor shaft is rotated. The sensor has a measurement range of ± 40° around its nominal position and the nominal sensitivity is 57 mV/° of shaft rotation.
If a height sensor is replaced the height sensor offset needs to be updated using the Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) approved diagnostic equipment.
