The adaptive shock absorbers are nitrogen gas and oil filled, triple tube units. The continuously variable adaptive shock absorbers allows, that the damping force can be adjusted electrically when the vehicle is in motion. This provides the optimum compromise between vehicle control and ride comfort.

Each adaptive shock absorber has a solenoid controlled hydraulic valve on its lower section to control the damping force. A housing is welded to the adaptive shock absorber body, which comprises the hydraulic valve and the damper solenoid. The damper solenoid is connected to the vehicle wiring harness via an electrical link lead. Each damper solenoid is controlled by the Chassis Control Module (CHCM) individually, using Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) signals. Under compression or rebound the fluid inside the shock absorber is forced through the variable orifices in the control valve. The damper solenoid varies the size of the orifice, thus the fluid flow to control the compression and rebound characteristics.
