Pinpoint Test A: Oil Consumption Test
- A1: CHECK FOR EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION
- Start the engine and allow it to run until it reaches normal operating temperature
- Make sure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and set ignition status to OFF
- Allow to settle for at least five minutes
- Check the oil level
- Correct the level, if necessary, and record the reading and mileage in the vehicle history
- Make sure that the owner/driver is aware that a test is being completed, and that they should not top-up their oil level for the duration of the test, but should check the level every 160-240 Km (100-150 miles)
- When the oil level reaches the ADD mark, the customer should bring the vehicle in to be checked
- Top-up the oil to the level at the beginning of the test and record the amount of oil needed to do so, and the mileage covered during the test
- From this, the consumption can be calculated, and a decision made if the consumption is considered excessive
Is the consumption excessive for the mileage and/or use?
Yes: GO to A3.
No: No further action is required
- A2: CONDUCT AN OIL PRESSURE TEST
- Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment, check datalogger parameter - Engine Oil Pressure aw (0x0415)
Does the vehicle have sufficient oil pressure?
Yes: GO to A3.
No: Contact the retailer technical support for oil pressure issues
- Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment, check datalogger parameter - Engine Oil Pressure aw (0x0415)
- A3: VISUALLY INSPECT THE VEHICLE
- Visually inspect the vehicle to double check there are no visible external oil leaks. Check all
the following components in relation to the engine:
- Seal(s) leaking
- Oil pipes leaking
- Oil cooler leaking
- Casings damaged
- Crankcase ventilation system blocked/leaking
- Crankshaft rear oil seal
Is there evidence of an external oil leak?
Yes: Rectify the external oil leak. Restart this pinpoint test and report the findings to the customer. The same test should be completed by the customer to make sure the vehicle is not burning excessive oil
No: GO to A4.
- Visually inspect the vehicle to double check there are no visible external oil leaks. Check all
the following components in relation to the engine:
- A4: VISUALLY INSPECT THE COOLANT WARNING: Before performing this step, make sure the vehicle has had sufficient time to cool down. Failure to follow this instruction could result in personal injury or death
- Make sure the vehicle has cooled down. Remove the cap from the coolant expansion tank. Inspect the condition of the coolant
Is there oil present in the coolant?
Yes: The oil could be leaking into the coolant through the oil cooler. Exit this pinpoint test and investigation the oil cooler
No: GO to A5.
- Make sure the vehicle has cooled down. Remove the cap from the coolant expansion tank. Inspect the condition of the coolant
- A5: TESTING THE ENGINE
- Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment, check for stored DTC relating to the engine
- With assistance from a colleague, rev the vehicle several times and observe the tail pipe, for the emission of blue smoke, the smell of burning oil, and/or any unusual tapping noises
- If there is no emission of blue smoke, scent of burning oil, or unusual engine (tapping) noises, conduct a road test. The road test is to investigate if any of the symptoms happen under load. Observe the rear view mirror(s) when safe to do so. The following criteria(s) must be met on the road test:
- Make sure the radio is turned Off , this will assist you, in being able to hear abnormal engine sounds
- Make sure the vehicle gets up to normal operating temperature
- Make sure the vehicle is driven under different loads (cruising, hard accelerations, hill starts)
Does the vehicle have any of the above symptoms?
Yes: It is likely that the valve stems are damaged/worn and/or the valve stem seals are damaged. Complete the rest of this pinpoint test and report the findings to retailer technical support. If the retailer technical support suggests stripping down the head of the engine, please take extra care to observe the valve stems and the valve stem seals.
No: GO to A6.
- A6: CYLINDER COMPRESSION TEST
- Complete a cylinder compression test. Refer to: CYLINDER COMPRESSION TEST - INGENIUM I4 2.0L PETROL
.
- Make sure the cylinder compression test gives a valid result. A Continuous Variable Valve Lift (CVVL) fault could indicate low or no pressure
Did the vehicle pass the cylinder compression test?
Yes: Contact the retailer technical support. Disassembly of the engine components will be required to find the source of the excessive oil consumption. It is likely that the vehicle will need a replacement engine due to damaged engine components such as cylinder bores being excessively scored or worn, piston rings being broken or worn, engine casings damaged etc. Wait for further advice from technical support
No: If the vehicle is considered to have excessive oil consumption, no external oil leaks, and the vehicle has failed the cylinder compression test, contact retailer technical support. It is likely that the vehicle will need a replacement engine. Exit this pinpoint test and when instructed to do so by the retailer technical support, follow the relevant removal and installation procedures to replace the engine
