The crankshaft is manufactured from forged carbon steel C38 MOD with induction hardened main and large end bearing journals. The fillets of the main and large end bearing journals are fillet rolled to improve the strength of the crankshaft.
The crankshaft is a 5 counterweight design to balance bearing loads to decrease vibration levels.
The variable flow oil pump with integral vacuum pump sends pressurized engine oil through drillings in the cylinder block to the main engine bearings. The pressurized engine oil lubricates the main bearing and through an oil groove in the upper main bearings transfer pressurized engine oil into the crankshaft. The pressurized engine oil goes through drillings in the crankshaft to lubricate the connecting rod large end bearings.
There are 2 different lower main bearing designs. The front 4 lower main bearings do not have oil grooves. The rear lower main bearing has partial grooves at each end.
The crankshaft assembly comprises the bare crankshaft and a dynamic balancer system drive gear. The dynamic balance drive gear drives the 2 counter rotating dynamic balance shafts at twice crankshaft speed.
There are 2 thrust washers, located on either side of the center main bearing. The thrust washers are located on the upper part of the main bearing in the cylinder block. The thrust washers control the crankshaft end float.

The crankshaft is retained in the cylinder block by 5 main bearing caps made of sintered steel. Each individual main bearing cap has a numbered identification (1 - 5) and an arrow to make sure correct location and orientation. The arrow on the main bearing caps must point towards the front of the engine.
There are a number of grades of main bearing available. Each main bearings upper and lower are color coded and inkjet marked with a grade number on the running face of the main bearings. The crankshaft is laser etched with a string of 5 alpha characters in the order of the crankshaft main bearing journals 1 - 5. There is also a data matrix code containing the same data. To make sure that the correct running clearance is obtained use the main bearing selection chart.
For additional information, Refer to: SPECIFICATIONS .
The main bearings - Upper in the cylinder block have a central hole and a groove. The hole and the groove allow the engine oil to lubricate the main bearing. The groove allows the engine oil to flow to crankshaft to feed the connecting rod large end bearing. The main bearings - Lower are plain bearings with no hole or groove.
