The structural camshaft carrier is a machined high pressure die cast aluminium alloy component. The camshaft carrier is located on 2 dowel pins in the cylinder head and secured with bolts. A gasket seals the camshaft carrier to the cylinder head.
The primary function of the camshaft carrier is to house and secure the intake and exhaust camshafts. The camshaft carrier bore geometry is bored in a single machining operation to make sure optimum friction reduction. Each camshaft cap is uniquely identified and must be matched to its respective bore.
The camshaft carrier also provides locations for the following components:
- Camshaft Position (CMP) sensors
- Oil filler pipe
- Continuously Variable Valve Lift (CVVL) assembly
- High Pressure (HP) fuel pump
- Engine vent oil separator.
The camshaft carrier has high pressure oil bores feeding the Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) actuators and provides thrust face lubrication. The oil returns to the oil pan under gravity through the cylinder block. The engine vent oil separator makes sure that only gases leave the engine and the oil is returned to the oil pan.
