Pinpoint Test E: Brake Fluid Level Low With Fluid Residue Evident On The Integrated Power Brake Module

  1. E1: BRAKE FLUID LEVEL LOW WITH FLUID RESIDUE EVIDENT ON THE INTEGRATED POWER BRAKE MODULE 1 
    NOTE: It is most likely a brake pipe or brake pipe nut that is the cause of the brake fluid leak. Always check for damaged pipes and loose or cross threaded brake pipe nuts before condemning the integrated power brake module.
    1. Clean all brake fluid residue from the brake pipes and brake pipe nuts connected to the integrated power brake module hydraulic control unit
    2. Start the engine
    3. Apply the brake pedal with a hard, sustained pressure
    4. Check components and brake pipes for leaking fluid on to the integrated power brake module

      Is a leak evident from a component or pipe?

      Yes:  Repair the component or pipe as necessary and retest

      No:  GO to  E2.

  2. E2: BRAKE FLUID LEVEL LOW WITH FLUID RESIDUE EVIDENT ON THE INTEGRATED POWER BRAKE MODULE 2 
    1. Check brake pipe nuts for signs of a fluid leak

      Is a leak evident from a brake pipe nut connection to the integrated power brake module hydraulic control unit?

      Yes:  GO to  E3.

      No:  Identify where the integrated power brake module hydraulic unit is leaking from. Take clear photographs of the leaking area and submit the image with an EPQR  . Install a new integrated power brake module as necessary

  3. E3: BRAKE FLUID LEVEL LOW WITH FLUID RESIDUE EVIDENT ON THE INTEGRATED POWER BRAKE MODULE 3 
    1. If the leak is evident from a leaking brake pipe confirm if the nut is loose or has been cross threaded

      Has the leaking brake pipe nut been cross threaded?

      Yes:  Install a new brake pipe nut and integrated power brake module. If the cross thread condition is thought to be a factory build issue, take clear photographs of the components and submit an EPQR 

      No:  Inspect the condition of the cone end of the leaking brake pipe. Replace the pipe as necessary. Make sure the brake pipe nut rotates freely when it is pressed up against the brake pipe cone. When the brake pipe is inserted in to the integrated power brake hydraulic control unit, make sure there is no side load on the pipe. Tighten the brake pipe nut to the specified torque. If a loose brake pipe nut is thought to be a factory build issue, submit an EPQR

  • Clean the front discs thoroughly with JLR approved Brake cleaning fluid and an appropriate scouring pad such as '3M Scotch-Brite', take care to remove all traces of pad material.
  • Using 150 grit Emery Cloth or similar designed paper for metal sanding with a block to apply 4-5 radial strokes across the braking surfaces (refer to attached photographs for before and after conditions).
  • Using 150 grit Emery Cloth or similar designed paper for metal sanding with a block, deglaze all brake pads prior to installation.
  • Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material and that no grease is applied to the brake pad guides.
  • With the vehicle stationary, engine not running, pump the brake pedal until the pedal is firm.
  • NOTE: The following steps must be done without excessive traffic.

    Drive the vehicle and make sure that the braking system operates correctly.

  • Using light to medium deceleration and varying speeds, leave at least 0.5 mile (0.8 Km) between each brake application
  • Drive the vehicle, performing 30 brake applications, with a duration of 3 seconds for each application.
  • Confirm customer concern is resolved
  • Please raise an EPQR  attaching the photographs/videos referencing this SSM if this instruction does not resolve the customer concern

Brake Disc Corrosion Inspection 

NOTE:
  • Jaguar Land Rover braking systems are designed to achieve peak performance under a broad range of driving conditions. Jaguar Land Rover's priority is the safety of its braking systems, and they are designed to perform in all circumstances, however the brake may, dependent on the environment and driving style, produce the occasional noise. This does not impair the operation or performance. Brake noise is an issue facing many vehicle manufacturers and Jaguar Land Rover are constantly working in conjunction with the leading brake caliper and brake pad suppliers to develop design solutions which reduce brake squeal noises.
  • Jaguar Land Rover Limited offers no warranty and is not responsible for any repair or replacement to the vehicle, part or accessory that is required as a direct result of: Normal wear and tear this includes brake pads, brake discs, and any other friction related components. The list is not exhaustive. Defects or damage caused as a result of the vehicle being used in motor sport events, or for any purpose other than normal, private, or commercial use. Brake pads, brake discs, and any other friction related components are covered against manufacturing defects for the duration of the manufacturer's warranty.
  • Most JLR brake pads now utilize NAO brake pad friction material technology. This creates a 'transfer layer' on the brake disc, whereas previous brake pads use an abrasive friction mechanism, which leads to greater pad and disc wear. This NAO transfer layer has a dull metallic appearance.
  • However, some situations with low brake usage, or through the use of non-JLR approved wheel cleaners, can lead to a build up of surface corrosion on the disc (see guidance below and in the appropriate service information) - this surface corrosion build-up does not adversely affect brake performance.

Brake pad to brake disc surface contact area measurement instruction
  • Section (A) is 100% of the brake disc working surface. To workout 30% section (B) of the brake disc working surface follow the below steps.
  • Step 1. Measure section (A) of the brake disc working surface. Example 60 mm.
  • Step 2. Divide the measurement from step 1 by 100. Example 60 mm ÷ 100 = 0.6 mm.
  • Step 3. Multiply the total of step 2 by 30. Example 0.6 mm x 30 = 18 mm
  • Step 4. This will give 30% section (B) of the brake disc working surface. Example 18 mm.

Heavy pitting with corrosion  - It is not necessary to replace the disc unless the corroded region covers more than 30% of the brake disc working surface.

NOTE: Brake discs are recommended to be replaced in axle sets.
Severe pitting and corrosion  - If the disc(s) condition is similar to the illustration. Replace the brake discs.

NOTE: The use of non-JLR approved wheel cleaners can cause accelerated corrosion of the brake disc.
  • Use of non-JLR wheel cleaners  - Evidence of use of non-JLR approved cleaners may be indicated where discoloration/corrosion of brake caliper/springs occurs.
  • SSM73952 And SSM73953 - Brake Caliper Discoloration  - provides guidance to use of wheel cleaners.
  • The pictures shown illustrate typical calipers on vehicles that are corroded due to using unsuitable cleaning agents
  • Corroded calipers, due to using unsuitable cleaning agents, are NOT covered by warranty.
