Deformation Of Instrument Panel Leather

NOTE:
  • This repair procedure would not be covered by vehicle warranty after Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI)
  • During this procedure, take care to make sure that the surface of the leather does not get so hot that it cannot be touched by hand. Care should also be taken to avoid putting your hand in front of the heat applicator.
  • During this procedure, changes in the leather will be observed. This is quite normal and indicates that the remedial procedures are proceeding as expected.

If the customer expresses a concern that the instrument panel leather is loose or wrinkled (see example image below), the steps detailed below should be followed to restore the instrument panel leather:

  1. Check the interior of the vehicle for signs of water ingress and make sure the interior is dry before continuing.
  2. Heat Treatment 1  - Using a heat applicator set to the lowest heat setting, gently apply heat for 2 minutes and 30 seconds to the affected area. During this time the heat applicator nozzle should be held approximately 200mm to 250mm (8 to 10 inches) away from the surface of the leather. Keep the heat applicator moving at all times, using a side to side/up down/circular motion making sure to cover the entire area.
  3. Leave the instrument panel leather to cool for 5 minutes.

  4. Heat Treatment 2  - Using a heat applicator set to the lowest heat setting, gently apply heat for 2 minutes and 30 seconds to the affected area. During this time the heat applicator nozzle should be held approximately 200mm to 250mm (8 to 10 inches) away from the surface of the leather. Keep the heat applicator moving at all times, using a side to side/up down/circular motion.
  5. Leave the instrument panel leather to cool for 4 hours.
  6. Visually check the instrument panel leather to see if it is still loose or wrinkled. If the instrument panel leather is not loose or wrinkled, go to step 8. If the instrument panel leather is still loose or wrinkled, go to step 7.
  7. Repeat steps 2 - 6 (above) a maximum of 3 times. If the instrument panel leather is still loose or wrinkled after repeating steps 2 - 6 a maximum of 3 times, instrument panel replacement should be considered.
  8. Repeat steps 1 - 6 for the other instrument panel leather if required.
