Camshaft Carrier (G2392162): Removal

NOTE:
  • This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending on the vehicle specification, but the essential information is always correct.
  • This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.

The following step(s) applies to: 

All vehicles 

  1. Disconnect the startup battery ground cable.

    Refer to: 12V SYSTEM DISCONNECT AND CONNECT

  2. Raise and support the vehicle on a suitable 2 post lift.

    Refer to: JACKING AND LIFTING

  3. Remove the upper timing chain.

    Refer to: UPPER TIMING CHAIN 

  4. Remove the Continuous Variable Valve Lift (CVVL) assembly.

    Refer to: CONTINUOUS VARIABLE VALVE LIFT 

  5. Remove the fuel injectors.

    Refer to: FUEL INJECTORS

  6. Remove the engine vent oil separator.

    Refer to: ENGINE VENT OIL SEPARATOR

  7. Remove the evaporative emission canister purge valve.

    Refer to: EVAPORATIVE EMISSION CANISTER PURGE VALVE

  8. Remove the High Pressure (HP) fuel pump.

    Refer to: HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP

    The following step(s) applies to: 

    Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) 

  9. Remove the coolant pump drive belt.

    Refer to: ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT - INGENIUM I4 2.0L PETROL

    The following step(s) applies to: 

    Non plug in hybrid electric vehicles only 

  10. Remove the accessory drive belt.

    Refer to: ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT - INGENIUM I4 2.0L PETROL

    The following step(s) applies to: 

    All vehicles

    • Disconnect the 8 electrical connectors.
    • Remove the 2 bolts.
    • Release the 4 clips.
    • Reposition the engine wiring harness away from the camshaft carrier assembly.

    • Remove the 2 bolts.
    • Remove the 2 engine cover support mounts.

    • Remove the 2 bolts.
    • Reposition the coolant hose away from the camshaft carrier assembly.

    • Remove the 19 bolts.
    • Remove the camshaft carrier assembly.

    Remove and discard the camshaft carrier gasket.

  16. NOTE: Do not disassemble further if the component is removed for access only.

    • Remove the 2 bolts.
    • Remove the 2 Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP).
    • Remove and discard the 2 O-ring seals.

    • Remove the bolt.
    • Remove the oil filler pipe.
    • Remove and discard the O-ring seal.
  18. CAUTION: Note the installed position of the component(s) prior to removal.

    • Loosen the bolts 1 turn at a time in the illustrated sequence.
    • Remove the 5 camshaft bearing caps.
    • Remove the intake camshaft.
  19. CAUTION: Note the installed position of the component(s) prior to removal.

    • Loosen the bolts 1 turn at a time in the illustrated sequence.
    • Remove the 5 camshaft bearing caps.
    • Remove the exhaust camshaft.
