The misfueling protection device consists of a mechanically operated flap and 3 fuel nozzle sensing tabs. When a 25 mm diameter diesel fuel filler nozzle is inserted into the fuel filler pipe, the 3 sensing tabs push in. This releases the flap into the open position. If a smaller 21 mm diameter filler nozzle is inserted in the fuel filler pipe, the 3 sensing tabs will not push in. The flap will not release and blocks the fuel nozzle from entering the filler pipe. The smaller diameter filler nozzle is typically used on petrol (gasoline) pumps.
